Rice Campus, Palm Trees???????

I love Palm Trees idk what it is. I live in New York, and i do not see to many of these--only in my house, lol. However, I would really like to know if there are Palms in Houston and on the Rice campus. Thanks!!!

I don't recall seeing palm trees. It is a pretty campus, though.

There are some in Houston. When you are driving to rice from the airport there is a few on the corner by the airport. Also, there are a bunch right where the rice campus ends and rice village begins. Out by the chem lecture hall there is a little palm plant of some type...more like a palm bush than a palm tree though.

And coming from LI, I also find a college with palm trees appealing. However, if this is a major criteria for you, Rice may be dissapointing - try Stanford, they have way more.

There are also "palm bushes" in front of sid richardson college. I just saw them.

I think most of the trees I've seen at Rice are beautiful oaks. If you drive south of Houston towards Galveston on I-45, you will see palms all along the freeway. I just saw a bunch today.

There are plenty of Palm Trees on Westhiemer where P.F. Changs is located; it is not that far from Rice.

Tookie - you're right on the live oaks, they are beautiful trees - nothing like them on Long Island.

Dog87,

I LOVE palm trees too. i lived in Florida for a total of 6 years and in Puerto Rico for 4 and i'm obsessed with the ocean and palm trees. its so depressing here in texas, but i've gotten used to it. rice has a pretty campus that makes up for the lack of a "tropical" feel. I visited stanford and loved the campus. it had about a billion palm trees. same goes for univ of miami..duh.

Ok...being a Rio Grande Valley girl I could not resist this one. :-)Washingtonia/Mexican palms are indigenous to Texas....they are the really, really tall ones that bring California to mind. They are more commonly found in the Valley, but grow well here in East Texas. Depending where you are in Houston, you will find them (and big date palms and Mediterranean palms) commonly used in commercial and residential landscaping. I have four big Washingtonias in my yard.

Personally, I think the Rice Campus has a Spanish/Mediterranean flavor with beautiful Italian cypress trees, graceful live oaks and tile roofed buildings. To me, something about Rice reminds a bit of Stanford.
