what's the campus and surroundings of rice like?

i'm not going to be able to visit rice (its too far away), so i'm wondering if anybody can tell me what the campus of rice and the surrounding areas in houston are like. are there trees and grass, or is it just concrete everywhere?

Here's a small group of photos I took in the past couple of years:

thanks wrprice, i too wanted such a thing

The campus has a lot of Green areas. I just visited campus last weekend and i was very impressed with the amount of trees. It doesnt feel like you are inside a city at all.

so, are u going to Rice jean Pierre?

I dont know for sure yet. Im deciding between Rice and Emory. Any advice?

well, I live abroad and cant help you there.. I havent visited either. My cousin and friend graduated from rice though so I know a bit of it./.. also that 2800 UG student number really is an attention grabber (with 5:1 student to faculty ratio)

the campus itself is very nature-esque, lots of grass, trees, etc. Outside the university's gates is basically a pretty affluent area of a large city, same as you'd probably expect to see anywhere. Lots of buildings, lots of people, lots of cars, lots of concrete. There's plenty of easy transportation to the Museum District, Theater District, downtown, etc, all of which are very nice(albeit EXTREMELY HOT pretty much all the time...don't let rice's claim of an avg school-year temp of 66F fool you).

how hot does it get then? where I live it touches 100 deg F in the summer and at 90% RH sometimes... so Im okay with the weather :D

ok well yeah it breaks 100 in the summer here...but you wont be here then anyways. its 91F right now, and pretty humid; has been for pretty much the last week. few weeks before that were in the 80's and werent unbearable. I predict a pattern of increasing temperatures until around the end of july, when they may finally peak. low-to-mid nineties i guess would be the hottest it gets during the school year.

you should just love it, antarius.

the campus is so beautiful. all the verdant areas and the serenating atmosphere. it is hot though but i like that.

luxar3000, i'll feel right at home :)

The campus is great--its kinda large, I guess. There are still buildings I didn't know existed, after one year of being here, but that's probably just my ignorance. The campus is green and there is an abundance of squirrels (but that's any college, right?) and annoying birds who like to jump in front of you. The water sprinklers like to turn on in the middle of the day. :D

I'm a jogger and during my four visits to Rice (my son is a freshman) I jogged around the perimeter of the campus every time. The 2.9 mile red-clay track is 95% under shade and attracts lots of walkers and joggers during the weekend morning hours.

Yeah, my son chose a good college :-)

The only problem with that clay track is if you aren't wearing closed shoes, walking becomes a problem because every few seconds you have to get tiny rocks out of your footware.

"The campus is green and there is an abundance of squirrels (but that's any college, right?)"

oh my god the squirrels are freaky theyre not afraid of people and one followed me for like 10 minutes and then stared me down ahh!

If you're scared of them now, you come back in the fall and they are bigger and rounder!

I hand-fed a SunChip to a squirrel in the RMC courtyard once. Looking back, it was a really dumb thing to do (diseases & such), but they're that domestic.

If it makes you feel any better squirrels don't carry rabies ( I hand feed my squirrels in NY and looked it up once.).

when i lived in south america i had two pet squirrels..it was awesome.
