Rice Class of 2017 ED/RD Discussion Thread

its pure concentrated awesomeness

sjong21:

Residential College system is extremely important. Baseball team is great. Houston is a gigantic emerging city. Rice kids are the happiest students in America.

Has anyone here been accepted at HPY and is still considering Rice?

Wash U and Rice are a lot alike. They both have very strong premed programs. Neither of them are known for their humanities programs, though I’d say Rice is better in that regard (though Wash U offers more majors). Wash U also has a business school and Rice only has a business minor. I find that Rice is more of a tight knit community than Wash U as it is half the size of Rice. Wash U also has Greek life while Rice is very immersed in the residential college system. Wash U was my second choice, but I was rejected. I have almost forgotten about it though.

Emory, on the other hand, I am not a huge fan of anymore. It was my top choice as a sophomore but I just didn’t like the people and their administration has been in trouble with the students lately. I just think Emory is a lot preppier and not as inclusive as Rice.

Joiedv, I’m not sure that HYP have released decisions yet. But I do know people who have turned down ivies for Rice.

parents have really been pushing me to stay near home in houston and attend rice, but i’m just trying to get away.

was recently accepted to wash u, so i was trying to find reasons to try and persuade them one is better than the other, since i know they’re quite similar. they definitely aren’t liking the tuition there though, and i can’t really blame them for that

If you want to go to a school like Rice, Wash U is arguably the closest you can get. I understand how you feel about wanting to escape your hometown. I live in Silicon Valley halfway between San Jose and San Francisco and I still want to leave. It’s a part of being independent.

Rice is fantastic guys, and I don’t know about WashU, but the residential college system here is top notch and makes for a unique experience.

I can understand wanting to get away from home, but at least give rice a fair shake. If you’re thinking premed, the med center across the street gives unparalleled option, especially since all the hospitals love Rice kids.

Best advice I can give: do overnights at both WashU and here at Rice and see what you like best!

I did both and I can honestly say that Rice has more of a community feel and (IMO) a better premed curriculum.

Joiedv, I’m definitely considering Rice even though I was accepted EA at Princeton. I’m really unsure of everything right now, but (if accepted) I might choose Rice for a number of reasons (its small and tight-knit community, its nerdy/quirky/intellectual student body, the fact that it seems more laid back and less pretentious than Ivy Leagues).

Guys…this is my life…like I want to go to rice so badly and if I don’t get in it’ll just really really suck. Praying for acceptance! I hope we all get in… 3 more days.

Decisions are this friday?? (I thought it was April 1, haha) Does anyone know what time they were released last year/an approximation for this year?

They were released last year on 3/23, which was a Friday. My understanding is that someone asked an admissions official while visiting campus, who confirmed that decisions will be released on the 22nd.

@michellel. My son was accepted EA at Yale and is waiting for Rice. He only applied to three schools. He hasn’t visited any of them as it was financially unfeasible. He will going to BDD at Yale. Have you visited multiple schools? Everything that we have read about Yale seems to indicate that it is more laid back than some of the other Ivies. We have heard nothing but good things about Rice. Just curious about someone else’s impression of Rice.
