Rice Class of 2017 ED/RD Discussion Thread

Accepted, but with no financial aid, which makes it impossible for me to attend. :(

Is everyone supposed to have gotten a notification by now? I haven’t gotten mine yet.

To anyone accepted from Southern California–is anyone going to the 2 day admitted students program April 10-12? If you are and are flying out of LAX let me know. We could share transportation from the airport to Rice and back (luckily, the admitted student dates for Rice slot between other accepted students programs that I am also going to attend)

PS if you are a Southwest Airlines Freq Flyer, yesterday they send out a single use code for 20% that you can use to book to Houston which will save about 100 dollars (look in your email but you have to fly round trip only and book by Monday)

Figuring out the Owl Days stuff too but fromf NoVa here-just out of curiosity, is it the same $400 airfare covered no matter where you’re from?

$400 would be an estimate based upon that a lot of SWA round trip flights to Houston are running around $500 right now for a flight second week in April, then subtract 20%.

Accepted! So excited!
2330 SAT / 36 ACT (superscored)

Rejected from two universities on the same day. Ouch ! first UCLA and now Rice

Hey guys I just found out that I have been rejected. Kind of a bummer. Not because I was very keen on going here but because
I had registered in a website which put my Rice chances at 41%, higher than schools like Columbia, Chicago ( where I was waitlisted) where it was 20%. So I was wondering whether these stats are true. If it is teue then I can kiss my Ivy Dreams goodbye.

Here are my details:
SAT: 2210
SAT2: Math 780 Phy 800 Chem 800
Toefl:115
EC: slightly anove average
Citizen: Indian

Does my being Indian and the fact that I told them I can only pay 18k tution fees are the reasons why I was rejected or it was just that I was not good enough?

^ Major: Engineering

Accepted!!

optimisticer, sorry about your rejection. For starters, I doubt your financial constraints were the problem-- most schools are need-blind and I believe Rice is. However, being from India probably doesn’t help. In general, it’s harder for international students to get into American schools because schools have only so many spots for them (it’s not like they have quotas, but rough objectives for the composition of the class). So, you’re competing against all other international students for limited spots, which is probably more competitive than the pool we American kids were in.

Also, you have to remember that Rice is a really selective school where admission comes down to a bit of luck no matter how qualified you are. Your stats look really good, but they don’t guarantee an acceptance. Plus, I’d be wary of websites that chance you. It’s not really an exact science.

Anyway, I hope you’re admitted to another great school; you sound like a really good applicant. Best of luck!

Thank you Michellel. That indeed made me feel better  although as far as I know Rice is Need-blind only for U.S Citizens, for international students it is strictly Need-Aware. I had filled the aid form and had written that I would be able to pay 18k and the remaining could be paid with an educational loan.

@baddriver- are they covering your airfare for owl days? I thought they only did that for Visions. Maybe I am reading your post wrong- just wondering!
@FutureDocSuave- sorry about the waitlist, but there is still a glimmer of hope. Kids do get in off the waitlist.
Don’t count your other schools out yet- there is no rhyme or reason to how they decide who gets in. My daughter was valedictorian and was waitlisted to Elon and Wake Forest (her first choice at the time because she did not think she would get in to any of her top three). Surprise- she got into both Emory and Rice! Did not get into Duke- but looking back we think she would not have been as happy there as she is at Rice. You will be happy where ever you go but the fact you were waitlisted means that you are right up there with everyone else as far as stats. Hang in there!! I am rooting for you to either come off the waitlist at Rice or get into JHU! Good Luck and keep us posted where you end up!

Congrats everyone!! Did anybody get accepted who did not visit campus and/or interview?

I think it is important I had a really good on campus interview and got in despite my SAT score not being stellar. A friend who was double legacy and had similar scores did not visit / interview and got rejected. The major probably has a lot to say though arts being less competitive than engineering that could also explain it. Who knows? I feel lucky to have been granted admission as it is clear from this thread that loads of worthy people got rejected or wait listed which is probably worse as its the hope that scars more than the disappointment.

@runnergurl I didn’t have the interview because I am a stupid moron who forgot about the interview request date… but I got in :frowning: I really don’t know why. I’m elated, but I saw all these people with higher stats get rejected and I’m just super embarrassed. Rice is truly a dream for me.

I also got in without an interview or visit.
and about the $400, maybe it is available depending on financial need?
I got an email about it today.

@baddriver Oh- that is so cool that they will help get you there. Are you going? I just sent my daughter an email yesterday telling her to volunteer to host during owl days! I think she would enjoy it.

Accepted. Pretty exciting to have 6 people from my school be accepted this year. Congratulation to everyone who got in, and for those that didn’t, your college process will land you where you were meant to be!!

I just got accepted, but there was no mention of any financial aid in the email. I haven’t gotten any mailed packages yet, so I was wondering how some of you guys knew about getting financial aid.
