Rice Class of 2023 ED Discussion Thread

Thank you so much @Houston1021 ! Very helpful info… I already got accepted to UT Austin Honors and Baylor with full ride… I also applied a few ivys for RD. Rice is my dream school I will still trying…

@Houston1021 I feel my academic stats are pretty good, 1590 SAT, math 800, Subjects tests math 780 US history 760, AP scholar, Captain for Varsity tennis, 1st chair varsity orchestra, etc… part time job, etc. I think I got confused with the “honors and awards” section on common app… I only put academic related awards in that section such as all A honors rolls, I didn’t put any tennis and music related awards since the section only asked for academic… Shall I use my portal to upload pictures of my trophies and awards for athletics and music? For example I have 1st place (singles and doubles) medals for tennis tournaments and videos of my cello performance at region… etc? I didn’t mention any non-academic awards in common app :frowning:

@RocketsAstro , may I ask when you heard about getting into UT honors and what your major is? My daughter got into computer science but we are still waiting to hear about the honors part. Congratulations on that Baylor full ride!

@TXRunningMom Plan II honors under Liberal Arts. Each college is different I guess…

@RocketsAstro
Do try to send a devotion note, an extra recommendation letter, any new award etc to Rice to get accepted.

If not fruitful then definitely go with Baylor’s full ride. It’s a smaller school, you’ll get more support and opportunities than you can ever get at overpopulated state schools like UT or UC.

@suacon I got the same email and was accepted!

Does anyone know if there is an official Facebook group for the class of 2023?

thanks, @Houston1021 ! I’ll be sure to call the office of financial aid on Monday. If you don’t mind me asking, do you happen to know if it’s possible to put down an enrollment deposit in order to secure my spot but break my ED contract if my financial aid coverage is bad? I’m sort of in a self-dug hole as I submitted most of the required files two weeks past the deadline and then realized that I’m actually missing something (the statement of assets document). I’m worried that I can’t get the file in on time—once I actually figure out what that file is—since Rice will be on break in about a week. Rice comes off break on Jan 2 and that will be one day after the deadline of the enrollment deposit. If I do not get financial aid, I will be financially incapable of paying Rice’s tuition and will need to break my ED contract. Basically, do you happen to know if it would be acceptable to pay this deposit so that I can see what kind of aid I get, and then break the contract if I find out that the aid is insufficient? I’m afraid of facing serious consequences for doing so. Sorry for asking up such a long question, but anything you may know would help immensely. Thanks!

I got accepted ED. SAT 1580: 790 in both math and reading/writing and GPA 4:6 weighted 3:93 unweighted, rank 9/638
I applied as a poly sci major.
I am a classically trained ballerina. (invited to attend Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow)
Holocaust Museum Docent
Intern at the LA District’s attorney’s office

Rice’s early decision admissions included 55 Questbridge matches.

@papercone get on the phone with the financial aid office asap. They should be working all of this week even though the students are on break. If you are local, go over there in person and sit down with them face to face. Breaking an ED contract is a very serious thing and you should not do it lightly. You should get a packet in the mail soon with a letter from Financial Aid telling you what your award is. If financial aid is missing documents I am sure they will work with you to get the documents. You are required to withdraw your other applications once you are admitted ED to Rice.

Good morning! This might be a weird question, but for those who got accepted… is it common that the interviewer would reach out to congratulate you on your acceptance? Just wondering.

@jmeryllman My daughter was accepted and received a congratulatory email from her interviewer - we were surprised to see it but glad they closed the loop with the interviewer.

Yes, my daughter got one too. I thought it was cool too.

Yes, @jmeryllman , D’s interviewer emailed right away as well.

Anyone got any merit aid ?

Just wondering if people who did alum interviews get emails from their interviewer as well?
