Rice Middle 50% Test Scores?

http://futureowls.rice.edu/futureowls/Freshman_Profile.asp

This link shows class of 2018 profile. I want to make sure I understand the Test Scores section correctly.

It is saying that of the 2677 admitted students their SAT scores were:

Bottom 25% scored <2120 for ~670 applicants

Middle 50% scored scored 2120 -2380 - for ~1339 applicants

Top 25% scored >2380!! for ~670 Applicants

No, you aren’t reading it right. They are only reported by sections so you cannot assume everyone scoring above 75th in one section is above 75th in all the sections. This does not give you the percentiles for total scores and there’s no way to know them from this.

You don’t read it by adding it up. You’ll never actually know total scores unless they give you a range for total scores. They break it down into sections so you have to break your score down into sections.

What are your section scores? Let’s break it down together. According to Rice’s chart (which BTW I had no idea Rice’s stats were so high LOL) 25 percent of people got a 700 or less on CR. 75 percent of people got a 790 or less on CR. I’m pretty sure (anyone correct me if I’m wrong) that this inherently means 50% of people got between a 700 and a 790 on CR.

Ok thanks I think I got it. So it means that over 25% of the admitted students scored an 800 on the math section. 25% scored > 790 on the CR and Writing sections? and 25% scored a 36 on the ACT? My DD has not taken either yet just trying to get an idea of the scores of their admitted students thanks.

Oh okay I didn’t realize you were a parent. But yes, I believe that’s the way it goes.

Also remember to look at the common data set (which is for the enrolled students Fall 2014) for more information. For example, only just over half of the students who are attending actually submitted ACT scores for consideration during admission (so there is some self-selection right there) and about 86% of those composite scores were between 30-36, with the 25th-75th percentile ACT range for those enrolled being 31-34.

I was also curious about the SAT scores posted on the “Future Owls” site. According to this information, the 75% scores for the Class of 2018 were a whopping CR 790, M 800, and W 790. These figures are in the HYP range, and they are well above the historical averages listed in the various Rice Common Data Sets and in assorted third-party publications (Princeton Review, US News, Niche, etc.). For example, Rice’s 2014-15 CDS lists the 75% scores as CR 760, M 790, and W 770–which are a bit above Rice’s historical averages, but still well below the stratospheric figures featured on the Future Owls site.

Can anyone explain this apparent discrepancy?

It might be a case of admitted vs enrolled. The “future owls” site specifically references admitted students while I think the Common Data Set references students who actually enroll. It’s likely that Rice admits a lot of high-scorers who end up going to another elite institution.

I am a current student in the class of 2018; those numbers seem about right.
