On Rice's website they state that their middle 50% of ACT scores for admitted students is 32-35, which would mean 25% of admitted students got a 36. Is this possible? 2528 students were admitted, so that would mean 632 admitted students got a 36. But I read that only about that number (a little less, IIRC) nationwide get a 36, and certainly not everyone that gets a 36 applies to Rice. Anyone care to shed some light?

Not all Rice students take the ACT.

ah, so its the middle 50% of those who submitted the ACT, which is much less than the 2,500 admitted. I overlooked that for some reason, thank you

Also, that means the 75th percentile gets a 35, I think that means that some of the top 25% could still have a 35 as well.

Those are some pretty impressive statistics hopefully I can raise my ACT up!

Remember that these ACT mid 50 scores are for accepted students but not necessarily students enrolled at Rice.

Most of the 25% above the middle 50% probably got a 35. I haven’t seen the data, but given that there are less than 700 36s each year, those probably don’t start until a much higher percentile.

That’s also true for the other end. Just because the 25th percentile score is 32 doesn’t mean the 20th percentile score isn’t also 32 (hypothetically speaking; again, I haven’t seen the data, so I don’t know).

I guess the same 600 kids with a 36 ACT score must apply to ALL the top 20 national universities, all the top 10 LAC’s, and all the top 20 state honors programs. It’s also odd that the top 300 schools all have an average SAT/ACT score in the top 5% of test takers…hmmm
