I have been accepted into Rice and University of Virginia. I love Rice for many reasons: Prof per student ratio, wonderful research opportunities, college residential system, quality of academics, etc. And what attracts me most at UVA is McIntire School of Commerce which was ranked No. 1 Among Nation's Undergraduate Business Programs(how difficult it is to get into McIntire in sophomore year?). It is a tough choice because I have not decided my major. And I might go to a grad business school in the future. As an international student, I can't visit the schools, so most of my feelings of these schools are based on their websites and brochures. Could anyone give me some advice (in terms of academics, grad school placement, job placement, reputation, etc.)?

I would appreciate your comments on both schools.

Rice has no undergraduate business program. You can take a business minor or a computational finance minor, but no business majors. Although I guess if you’re not accepted to the UVA undergrad business school it might be the same thing. This is the wrong place to ask about that though.

What you can take at Rice is Econ / Math-Econ / Stat / Applied Math and the Managerial Studies major which is only offered as a double major. The problem with Rice is that because it’s a small school, it can’t offer everything. But it does offer as much of a variety as is possible in a school of its size, and people go for what they want e.g. there is no visible pre-law program at Rice but people get accepted to Harvard/Stanford law all the time. Also people do get internships for business consulting and investment banking if that’s what you’re interested in. So this is a good place for people who aren’t too sure of what they want to do. I know plenty of people who are interested in business and are doing just fine here at Rice. That being said, I would not come to Rice if I wanted to be a business major just because the major doesn’t exist. So I guess it really depends on how interested in business you are.

Just because you’re interested in business doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come to Rice. Top liberal arts colleges and universities like Williams, Amherst, Columbia, Stanford and Dartmouth (list goes on and on) do not have undergraduate business programs but place extremely well as some of the top feeder schools to the best law and business schools in the country. Rice is also one of the top feeder schools - you DON’T need to major in Finance or Accounting in order to get into a business school.

Like medical school and law school, business school is all about GPA and high test scores (on the GMAT). That’s what it really comes down to, to be honest.
