Rice residential System

I need an answer for this:

Say I wanted to be in a particular college(let's say Martel). Do I get to ask for that college? I know it is a random selection, but I read that certain people could ask for certain colleges.

Certain people can -

They are people who have a parent or sibling who lived at a particular college (possibly grandparent, though not sure on that one). These people can request to either be in the college their relative was in, or not to be in that college. If they choose not to be in that college, they do not get to designate an alternative.

PS. You don't really want to be in Martel anyway. Plus, Martel is not a college.

I just thought I'd add that you really do want to be in Martel. Having a single as a freshman = awesome.

seriously martel does suck. My coadvisor for O-week was a martelian and she would tell us how it is so hard to get martelians to go outside and do anything. Plus people at Martel are not good-looking. I am not at Brown or Jones (I am at Lovett), but I would recommend being in one of those. I really like Jonesians and Brownies. Also, you should go throught the "random" process like everyone else.

Can you blame them for not wanting to go out? Don't they always say "10% more?"

I love a whole bunch of people from Brown, too.

How would the students in one college be uglier than students from another? I thought they assigned people randomly.

Unless the administration is consciously segregating people by beauty, lol.

I think the fact that I'm in Martel is evidence of its sexiness. I'm also incredibly modest.

a single as a freshmen does sound really nice. Do any of the colleges at Rice have split doubles?

Martel is so far away from everything. Being in a South College is soooooo much better.

Actually, all of my classes but one are on the north side of campus. Hooray for science!

Philosophy isn't really on the north side. haha

That's the "but one." I probably need the exercise, anyway.

Ooooh torres- don't tell me you re on the "who is and isnt good looking " thing again  As for the colleges, I would imagine that with the new colleges being built on North campus it'll be kinda loud and dusty up there for the next few years. But seriously, they're all fine. But gee.. didn't they sell Martel on ebay a few years ago?? (wish the link to that still worked. it was hysterical)

I cant believe that you pick Martel DORMITORY as your example... looks like the real colleges are going to light on them

come on! single rooms!

hmm... ill survive.. Im at Wiess and my bdroom (for 2 of us) is 264 sq. feet and the common room is 200 sq. feet... no complaints.. and Wiess is a college!!!

Wiess is a prison. Don't drop the soap!

I am a freshman at Martel and I can tell you that very, very few freshmen get singles. But it is true that we have the best rooms on campus by far (however, two new colleges are being built starting this spring, so maybe they'll be contenders?) I live in a quad suite (common room, bathroom, and two doubles) and it's great. The double rooms are L-shaped so that there is privacy. I don't really see why a single would be that much better anyway, it would be so tiny. All rooms in Martel are suites, either with four people or six, in double rooms or single rooms.

As for choice in college placement, there can be some: if you have a family member who attended Rice, you can request either to be placed or not to be placed in their college. You can also request to be in the same college or in a different college than a friend (and to be their roommate or not to be, if they're of the same sex of course). Otherwise, you don't have any choice.
So I guess that could be considered bad news, but the good news is that they do a really awesome job in putting suitemates/roommates together. My suitemates and I are really good friends, and while that isn't always the case, I've only ever heard of one or two roommate problems.

But this really isn't something you should worry about. No matter what college you are placed in, you will love it and think that it is the best--that's what Oweek is basically, a (really fun) indoctrination into your college. The college masters, RAs, and older students are a great support system and all that stuff. All colleges have parties and cool people and fun stuff. Last weekend, Martel had Oktoberfest, which was a German-themed party. Tonight they're having pumpkin carving in the commons. Lots of study breaks.

And to any Martel-bashers, I reply: Your mom is not a college! and 10% more! ; )

Your mom is less of a college than mine is.

However, Martel bangs your mom, college or not.
