Rice SOAR 2017

Hey, I received an email from Rice inviting me to apply for their fly-in program called SOAR. I heard that they only invite a select number of students to apply while other people who weren’t invited can still apply. I want to start this thread for anyone who is planning on applying/when decisions are released.

You should move this to the Rice section of the site.

I’m pretty sure they send out a mass invite to every minority rising senior whose email they have managed to accumulate through ACT, Collegeboard, website inquiries, etc. so I wouldn’t read anything into it, but good luck!

MaybeHarvard2022, I just submitted my application myself. I had read past forums that described an “essay” and how they listed their EC’s; however, that did not seem to be on this year’s application. Are you planning to apply to SOAR? What are your stats?

Has anyone applied yet?

@nrrviva Not me, took a break from applying to fly ins for a bit. I plan to apply within the next 2 weeks tho

@the12thwoman Yes I plan on applying. Im African-American, low income, salutatorian of a class of 588, 30 ACT (yes this is a bit low, planning on retaking in September), National AP Scholar, University of Southern California Bovard Scholar, Questbridge College Prep Scholar, Alexander Hamilton Scholar Finalist, etc

Good luck to all of you SOAR applicants! I attended the program last fall and it was awesome. Now, I’m starting at Rice in the fall  .

@anicole45 Did you get invited back to VISIONS or do you think if you do SOAR it makes you ineligible?

@planner03 I’m not sure if attending SOAR made me ineligible but I did not receive an invite to VISION. I would say that my participation in SOAR probably did have something to do with it, though.

@anicole45 Thank you–most schools will only pay for one visit so I assume it is the case but just wondering.

I heard only 60 people are invited to apply to this program. Is this true?

@YoLolololol I heard that as well but it is incorrect, Rice invites thousands of students to apply it seems.

Maybe 60 are chosen to attend? The only distinction about being invited to apply is that they somehow have your email address.

My daughter submitted her application yesterday. I know her chances are slim, but I hope she gets this opportunity to go visit Rice.

Has anyone heard anything yet? Do they accept on a rolling basis or do they review once the deadline has passed?

@MaybeHarvard2022 , the confirmation email my daughter got said: “The Rice Office of Admission will be reviewing applications on an ongoing basis. You will be notified by email as selections are made for SOAR and no later than Friday, September 8.”

Just submitted my application. Has anyone heard anything yet?

I applied in late July and I still haven’t heard anything back. It was a little bit of a stretch for me because my ACT scores is a 29 and my gpa is a 3.9. Plus I have never taken an AP class before ( My school only offers one AP class a year). However, I will have 6 Dual credit classes under my belt by the time I graduate.

If last year’s pattern holds true, acceptances should start trickling out this week…
