I am starting to work on my Rice supplement essays and I have a couple of questions so any help would be appreciated.

First, for the question asking about which school you are applying to in the University, are you supposed to talk about qualities of the school itself or qualities of the major they have in the school?

Second, is it just me or is it difficult to write two to three pages about "What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice?" Are they asking for what specifically you will contribute to Rice or what experiences that make you unique?

Actually for the first question I wrote above, let me rephrase it: Do they want you to explain why you are interested in pursuing the subject/major that you will be doing in college or explain what qualities of the school (in this case natural sciences) that you like?

Ok, for your first question, I asked that too a little while back, and I got responses saying that people did either of those and still got in. I would try writing whichever way you feel you could seem more passionate about it. For example, I’m also planning on applying to Natural Science, but I’m not set on a specific major, I’m actually torn between Math, Biochemistry, neuroscience, and chemistry, so in my case I think it makes more sense to write about natural science over a certain major. But overall, either is fine.

I’m done with my first take at the Rice main essay, and my essay fills two pages (this is double spaced by the way). I’m thinking once I finish the entire thing it’ll be 2 pages and then maybe 1/4 of the third page. Maybe you just thought it was long because you weren’t double spacing? Because anything less than 2 pages double spaced is getting closer to a paragraph than an essay. What I did for that essay was found a characteristic I felt I would contribute, and then I thought of a good story where I exemplified this a lot, that was also a creative/interesting story.

I’ve seen you post on here a couple of times, so if you’re interested I can pm you my essay. Also, if you google something like “Rice perspective essay”, there are a bunch of examples online.

Thanks for your help! And you are right. I am doing the Why Rice essay right now and that is almost a full page double spaced so the perspective essay probably won’t be too difficult to write long (I haven’t started that one yet).
