I was rejected from Rice E.D. and I plan on trying to transfer from Emory to Rice....My high school stats were 2200/2400 and a 1500/1600, my high school gpa was 3.8 unweighted with a 4.1 weighted....My class rank sucked, I was top 20 percent....I had taken 10 A.P.s and 7 Advanced Classes out of 28 total classes.....I live in Texas....Should I try to transfer after my first semester at Emory, or should I wait a whole year..I think I can maintain a 3.5 at Emory.....

ok

how do you know that Emory isnt gonna be good? this is setting yourself up for problems…

GO to Emory with an open mind. if you DISLIKE it then think about this.

If not, you are gonna have a miserable first year, and then try to transfer where there is no guarantee of admission, leave alone housing etc.

having planned on a transfer from the word go, and it doesnt happen u will be miserable

seriously, Emory is a fantastic college, how do you know Rice is gonna be better??

What you should do is try to get super excited about going to a great, well-respected college (Emory!). See what you think after your first semester. If you want to transfer then, try. But maybe you’ll have forgotten all about Rice. Or if your stats aren’t so great, wait until freshman year is over. If you want to transfer then, go for it.

But like Antarius said, go to Emory with an open mind and see what you think. I see you’re from Texas so maybe Rice was your dream school (I’m speculating), but don’t think for a second that you can’t be happy and successful at Emory.

Emory’s pre-med acceptance rate is only 55 percent…Half the pre-meds from Emory score less than a 30 on the mcats…Rice has a pre-med accpetance rate in the high 80s…which means that the majority of pre-meds score 30+ on the mcats from Rice…

I can’t go to South Atlanta, or West Atlanta, because its really unsafe, the only part of Atlanta I can go to is north Atlanta…(Half the city is blocked off to me) Rice kids only have to worry about the 3rd ward…Current Emory students and Native Atlantians have told me to stay away from South and West Atlanta at all costs, unless I feel like getting shot or stabbed…

3.Rice is also 10 grand cheaper than Emory…

Emory’s dorms suck, Rice has suite type of living where as at Emory you are stuck in a tiny room with another roommate…Rice has 4 seperate rooms, and 1 common room I think…

Colleges00701, you’re such a whiner. Suck it up or go to Texas A&M. I really don’t want to be around people like you at Emory.

rofl hahahaha I guess I will have to suck it up for a semester or a year…

Good, at least pretend to like it.

Since my high school stats suck, do I run the chance of being rejected from Rice again if I apply after my first semester? Or should I wait the entire year?

you arent listening to what other members are saying. Honestly, with that attitude i dont see why Rice would accept you

Your facts are half baked. totally. I have never heard that you CANNOT go to half the city. people just advise caution. thats it

And 80% of Rice has “tiny rooms with roommates”. Only 2 out of 9 colleges has suites like that with Singles and a common room

Well I am going to go to Emory with an open mind (the student body is very friendly and helpful)…but in the long run I wouldn’t want to be a pre-med at Emory

you do realize that pre-med isnt a major? and its a set of like 6 classes or some junk like that?

I mean, i can become pre med next semester if I want… how does that matter?

You need to do well and have a good GPA to get into med school

Yes I know pre-med isn’t a major, its a career path…I am majoring in Economics and still taking the basic pre-med classes…Emory’s pre-med advising is horrible compared to other peer schools…Current Emory upper classmen told me that they are frusrated with the advising they are recieving(many of them did seriously consider transferring to Northwestern/Duke)…I know kids who went to Rice and were very satisfied with the pre-med advising because they got into some top medical schools (ie Duke, Northwestern, Baylor, Emory, and Cornell)…Even Emory’s Medical School thinks the pre-med advising for Emory’s Undergrad is bad(I read this in Emory’s School Newspaper, while I was visiting Emory)…Emory is trying to revamp their pre-med advising but it will take some years before its on the level a school of Emory’s reputation should be on…

just see how it goes. dont plan on transferring. thats really it. if you are unhappy or have issues after the first year, then post back

College is what YOU make of it, it doesnt matter if you go to Texas A&M, Harvard, ASU, whatever. You can get a high level of education from almost any undergraduate institution. If you are worried about getting into med school then instead of acting like a pre-pubescent little boy or girl, study extra hard for the MCAT when the time comes and get a high score. You are not going to get handed a path into med school, a high paying job as a doctor, or anything in life. You need to go earn those things. So trust me, if you go into Emory with this mindset you will be absolutely miserable. You think you are fine and dandy now while in the comfort of mommy and daddy, but if you ar ethinking abou ttransfering without even being there, you are going to feel very lonely while off at school.

Colleges00701,

It’s funny that you are already considering transferring to Rice because I’m a pre-med student going to Rice next year, but I had second thoughts about turning down Emory (and Duke too)… maybe we should switch places I loved Emory since my freshman year of high school, so it felt like I was breaking up with it when I turned them down. But anyway, I’m going to keep an open mind at Rice, and if I don’t like it after a year, I might transfer to Emory or Duke. I’ll probably have just a good of a time, if not slightly better, as I would at Emory or Duke.

But anyway, even though you did not get into Rice, I think your thoughts are normal… I got rejected from Stanford (one of my dream schools, along with Rice, Emory, and Duke) and keep thinking what if I went to Stanford… I think that Stanford will somehow open more doors for me than Rice would, just like it appears that you think that Rice will open more doors for you than Emory would. But in reality, it is up to you to open those doors… you can definitely go to Harvard or Duke med school from Emory. I’m sure Emory will be a lot better than you think it is… In my opinion, Atlanta is a cooler city than Houston and the campus is drop-dead gorgeous (I liked Emory’s campus slightly better than Rice’s… although they are both very beautiful ). Emory’s pre-med acceptance rate is somewhat low; however, I emailed the career services guy at Emory and he said that if you get a 3.5 GPA and above 30 on the MCAT, the acceptance rate is about 90 percent, which is on par with Rice’s med school acceptance rate.

So keep an open mind like I am, try it out for a year, and if you don’t like it, then think about transferring. That’s what I am going to do. I bet in a year from now, we will both be thinking why did we waste our time on such thoughts :)

Get excited about Emory!! Even though I have second thoughts about turning down Emory and lamentations about being turned down at Stanford, I’m still very excited for Rice. I bet if you buy some Emory gear and a bumper sticker, you will get more excited for Emory and forget that you didn’t get into Rice. Also, think about the advantages Emory will give you… it does not get any better than conducting research at the CDC (I think 5-10 min walk from the Dobbs University Center). Emory will give you plenty of other research opportunities as well. The professors there are just as good as Rice professors, and the Econ department might be slightly stronger at Emory as well.

By the way, Emory is in the beautiful Druid Hills… very little crime here. There is also downtown, Buckhead (Atlanta’s version of Beverly Hills), Decatur, and also many other nice areas of Atlanta for shopping and entertainment. Sure Atlanta has a lot of crime, but there are also so many beautiful parts that balance out the crime-ridden parts.

I’m from Cincinnati, and mainly the northern and eastern parts of the town are safe. The other parts of town are not that safe, but I still drive through there or visit some places in those parts. You just need to be careful, that’s all. Every city has bad parts, Atlanta is no different.

Also, when I watched the Emory Video Visit, they interviewed a Emory student who got into Johns Hopkins med school, Emory med school, and I think WashU’s med school. So it is definitely possible to go to a top med school from Emory.

OP - i hope u listen to these above posts… cause emory is a great school. most of us get rejected someplace we really want to go… (save for a few) and go elsewhere and have a great time.

my cousin went in to college with a prejudice against it and started thinking about transferring etc. almost did after having a miserable first year. I talked him out of it (cause it was a bad move in every way… financially and brandname wise) and now he loves the place. once you stop the “what if” and “maybe” everything is good
