Reflection
•Strengths: Good AP courses & ACT. fundraising essay;

•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: demonstrated intent; genuine understanding of Rice’s values
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: Case, RPI, CMU,

Surprised that you weren’t deferred!

Sorry, that was meant for user sahar

They may look for whether you are applying to similar schools or just applying randomly based on prestige or geography. For eg: Columbia and Harvard are top schools, but would offer extremely different experience if you are looking for an engg. major. Say somebody applying to Rice puts down SMU, UT, A&M etc, shows a strong geographical preference.
It doesn’t help or hurt - but just one more data point for the school to understand the applicant.

I started my own international, incorporated nonprofit and I was rejected!!!

@Abbylawi: comment about okiepokie? Pleasantly surprised getting accepted too - Would have been happy to settle for Case or RPI (Renssalaer Medallist with guaranteed $25k merit scholarship per year at RPI). Non-TX applicant (Hear that lot more applicants from TX) and alum parent may also have helped. Who knows how the admission committee evaluates the applications. (Parent not active in alumni activities).

A little bummed I didn’t get any scholarships. Did anyone get the Lone Star Scholarship?

I got deferred. That’s a damn sham.

Decision: Accepted
* I was accepted to Rice through QuestBridge with a full scholarship!!

•Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.95; weighted= 6.02

Reflection
•Strengths:Essay and teacher recommendations; i poured my heart out in my essays and i know my recommendations were good, i read them and it made me cry a little
•Weaknesses: SCORES; ALL SCORES
•Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: tbh im not sure. I didnt think it would happen and i still dont believe it. I think the main reason is how I overcame my household situation and many other obstacles. In my application i was just honest about who i was and hoped that Rice would see the student that is hard to describe on a piece of paper. And I am guessing they did.
•Where else you are applying or have already applied: I only applied through QuestBridge and ranked 5 colleges

  1. Stanford
    2)Yale
    3)MIT
  2. RICE
  3. UPenn

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:
I am just so happy and excited that i am going to be attending Rice on a full scholarship!! I have not had the chance of visiting Rice yet but i really do believe that it is a good fit for me. And i cannot wait to meet all the other wonderful students that will be attending. I also want to say that I think that I am proof that scores are not the only thing that matters. In my opinion, I think my scores are low compared to other students who have been and will be admitted. My advice to other future applicants is to just be yourself in your application. Use your essays to show Rice who you really are.
