Rice University Interview: Should I Bring a Resume?

Hi! I have my Rice University interview next week, and I was wondering if I should bring a resume to the interview. If so, what should I put on the resume? Also, are there any tips that you can give me to help with my interview? Thank you in advance! Rice is my dream school, so this interview means a lot to me, and I'd like as much help as I can to do my best! :)

@Anonymouse‌1225 If you ask 5 people, you will get 5 different answers about why it is good or bad (<a href=“College Interview: Good to Bring a Resume? - Applying to College - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/453391-college-interview-good-to-bring-a-resume.html</a>).

I personally think it isn’t a bad idea, if only to offer it as something to skim through. You can just list some of your interests and activities, things you’ve done that you think would be good talking points. I don’t really have any good advice about whether you want to put grades in. Read the link above, which is not specific to Rice, and decide for yourself. As a side note, I don’t remember bringing an resume and I was accepted, so it’s not a huge deal :)

As far as interview tips go, I would definitely be relaxed and act like yourself (a friendly and polite version of yourself, but yourself). The whole point of the interview is to get to know you. I had an alumni interview, and they didn’t grill me or anything, but I was expected to talk about things I had done and answer open ended questions about my interests and experiences. Come prepared with questions to ask! I just wrote mine down on a piece of paper that I could pull out when he asked if I had any. Feel free to respond with any questions!

@jfking01 Thank you for your advice! I’m pretty nervous about this interview, but I’ll try to relax. I was wondering. What kind of questions did you ask? I’m not entirely sure what I should ask about, but I know that it has to show that you actually researched Rice beforehand. Thanks again! :)

Well my best advice is that they should be questions you actually have! Sure, they want to see that you are inquisitive, but it’s not all about judging you – it’s actually meant to be an opportunity for you to clear up anything you didn’t know the answer to.

I think that more personal experience-oriented questions lend themselves to this and will benefit you more than asking something statistical. For example, asking about the experience of the residential colleges, or a certain aspect of them like friend groups or something. Or maybe something like a question about campus opportunities or clubs/special interest groups, or stuff around Houston. It doesn’t hurt to look up this stuff beforehand, but just because there’s info online doesn’t mean you can’t ask for a personal perspective.

Is this an on-campus interview or alumni? I guess your questions will differ a little depending on that, since the admissions office people didn’t all go to Rice. Still friendly though :)

@jfking01 My interview is on-campus. I’m hoping it’s a nice, laid back person, so it won’t be so nerve-wracking lol. I

So wait a minute. Interviews are not for the college? They’re for the students? I’ve heard about how college interviews don’t count much unless you’ve had a super bad/super good interview, but I still thought they were for the college more than for the student. Hmm. Just out of curiosity. How’s your experience been at Rice?

Rice likes to do interviews in college to gauge interest.

My point is more that it is not entirely either. They want to be impressed, but they also want to help you. And my experience has been wonderful! I am going into my sophomore year and I can’t wait to get back to school.

I could talk forever though so if you have any specific questions I’d be happy to answer them! Or you could PM me or make a new post and I could answer them there. It’s probably good to keep this post focused on one topic for others who wander through looking for info.

@texaspg Oh yeah. That makes sense!

@jfking01 That’s awesome! I’m really excited to find a place where I’ll look forward to going there! I hope you don’t regret that offer lol because I’m going to ask so many questions, so sorry in advance!

Thank you both for your replies! I really appreciate it! :)
