Ugh packet come to Georgia quicker!
In SC and my packet hasn’t come yet (perhaps it’ll come today). JHU came yesterday though. And my prom dress
Literally got my packet an hour after I posted
My D’s packet came yesterday. @123peace we are also from Colorado!
@co88dad Yay, a fellow Coloradan! Is your daughter considering any other schools?
@123peace not anymore. She has committed to Rice!
@123peace Just to add, my D was accepted to Wash U in St. Louis (no scholarship) and Case Western (with merit) among a few others but decided Rice was for her.
@co88dad that’s awesome! Hopefully I will see her around
My S may be joining you guys! We are in Houston right now and will be checking it out for a couple of days. He is deciding between Rice and Columbia SEAS.
@1203southview Everything I have read about Rice has been excellent (academics, student life, …). We visited Rice in mid-February and were really impressed with the campus and what we heard. Don’t know much about Columbia except it is also a very good school. Hope to see you all at O-week at Rice!
This is the worst, I don’t want to drown in loans after graduation, but I can’t afford Rice any other way. As a NMS, I can go to OU essentially for free and I thought I was okay with that, but when my Rice packet came yesterday I felt like crying. It’s been my dream school and I wish money wasn’t holding me back. :-/
I didn’t get any financial help at all…no merit or need-based
I will be majoring in Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering, and I’m having lots of trouble deciding between UT and Rice. I am planning to go on a premed track, but I’m not quite sure of that idea–if I do, which college would be better? I know Rice had posted in a pdf that 88% of Rice’s med school applicants actually get into med school…not sure if this percentage is skewed. BME is a hard major (both at Rice and UT), and if I do plan on going premed, I might have to switch majors if my GPA prospects aren’t looking too hot…any suggestions? My family and I have been having heated debates over the past few days
Thanks!
Same happened for my son – no aid no merit! Now, it’s between UVA Engineering at in-state tuition or Rice for another $100k…Any thoughts or recommendations? Is Rice Engineering worth the difference?
@yankeed I’m not an expert but I would say definitely not.
About to decline my offer from Rice
@FutureOilBaron :^)
@yankeed Oh my gosh! Instate tuition at UVA versus full cost at Rice for engineering?? This is a no brainer. Sorry but Rice Engineering just isn’t that great all across the board. I should ask which area of engineering, though?
@yankeed Um, you do know Rice does not offer Aero, right??
saismom: Did your son decide between Rice and UVA? Same situation with my son… We just came back from the Rice Admission Day, it was very nice, all in favor of Rice, but the cost…
My son made the decision between Rice vs. UVA Engineering w/ in state tuition (plus Rodman Scholar) four years ago, in favor of Rice despite our struggle with the cost. He lined up the Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering curriculum of those two schools (and several others) and found Rice a better fit for him because as a freshman he would be doing there what he would be doing elsewhere a year later. It was an excellent decision since as a senior, he has had many excellent and competing job offers to choose between including one that is his dream job. Undergraduate summer work included doing research at the TX Medical Center (adjacent to Rice) and Rice’s BioScience Research Collaborative. And, he was fully involved: double majored in a humanities, played for a Rice team all four years, held elected positions in his residential college, etc. Whether this is helpful, may depend on your son’s area of study. Good luck.
