@Picarat I’m not the person you tagged haha but I’ll try to help. Merit scholarships show up on your admission portal too. If you go to view your admission letter then scroll down to the bottom, there should be a link that says “Decision Letter (displayed)” and the under it will be a link that says “Scholarship Letter” if you got merit. I think they’re on Esther as well, but I would check the portal if nothing’s showing up on your Esther.
@Picarat I have no idea. They have students manning the phones (in both admissions and finaide) and I couldn’t get a straight answer out of anyone. They did check to make sure that all my documents were in and then told me that even if its not showing up on Ester, all the paperwork was mailed over the weekend and should arrive any day. Sorry I can’t be more help. They wouldn’t even tell me if I got anything other than the standard $5500 loan.
@z0e101 @MuggleMom Thanks both of you! I’ll just wait for the letter to come and call financial aid if I have more questions
Does anyone know when and if an admissions packet will arrive by mail?
@DL43516 From experience with other schools it seems to be a few days to a week later.
What part of Texas are you from?
@DL43516 Honestly I have no clue. I’ll try calling them in a few minutes and see if they do that
Extremely disappointed with the financial aid package Rice offered my son. It has basically marked Rice off the list, and it was one of his favorite schools going into the process. How do they expect a family who basically makes (not clears) barely 100K a year to pay 34K in tuition? Thankfully Notre Dame gave him a very favorable financial package. Theirs came in at half the tuition owed by us than Rice. How is that even possible? We sent the same info to both schools, and their base tuition is basically the same. Happily he was more excited by the Notre Dame acceptance than any of his others. Just curious if anyone else has had the same experience? Looks like we will be an Irish family in the fall!
Momof2intn, did you run the NPCs for each school? Is there a family owned business n the picture? I’ve seen it go both ways with ND and Rice, but never could figure out what causes the difference. Neither school is in the 468 Presidents’ group of colleges that do use consistent methodology. They both fully meet financial need, but have different definitions and count things like Home equity value, family businesses, etc differently. Depending upon where your assets are and other situations, the aid could be the same. I know a few who applied to both schools, and their aid packages were competitive with each other.
@momof2intn we had the same situation with WUSTL. Offered us around 8,000 in aid. Luckily for us, Rice offered a very generous merit scholarship, Kid is going back and forth between MIT, Rice, JHU, and now Princeton’s in the mix. Rice will cost us the least. I think he got the nice scholarship because he has great stats and has attended all of their recruiting events held in our area for 2 years and attended MuAlphaTheta at Rice every spring.
Honestly I ran so many NPCs that I lost track of exactly who was what. But I never saw a discrepancy as high as what Rice offered vs what was “normal” on the NPCs. Granted they were all different, but not that different. My son is very happy with Notre Dame. It is pretty close to what we expected in cost, so I think it all worked out for the best. Just shocking the difference in the offer and wondered if others had noticed it too.
Has anyone found out if/when the admissions packet will be mailed?
@xtina1001 I got mine in the mail today and I live in Texas. Should be coming soon!
Nice choices, bordertexan!! Good luck!
Rice packet arrived on the east coast today. Not a penny of financial or merit aide. Bummer.
im sorry to hear MM. In LA we’re still wating on his packet to arrive!!!
That’s Louisiana. G cannot logon to Esther b/c he cannot locate the email from Jan giving the login info. says it is gone and cannot be located. so he emailed Rice to reset his Esther so he can see if theres any Merit aid, grant, scholarship etc… today is APril 3 = Rice hasnt responded with the reset instructions!!! and still no paper packet!!.. perhaps there is NO merit aid grant etc… (At the bottom of the “acceptance email on March23” there was no “decision letter” or “award letter” that others on this forum have referred to) W cannot afford $55 K per year so it will be a huge bummer if they don’t offer $… Hopefully this “packet” will come tomorrow!!! Hang in there everyone
FOR APPEALING FA PACKETS? is it better to Call FA or mail letter to FA?? also, is each accepted student assigned a particular FA Counselor? THis is our first child so we’re very new at all of this-- ANY advice or comments are welcome. THXXXX
Packet came in Yesterday; I’m from Texas. For a bit, I thought it got lost lol, because I don’t live too far from Rice
Hi tropicallushies, what is your area of study at Rice? I would like to know more about their Biomedical engineering.
