Rice University

Do Houston kids have a really hard time getting in Rice ? ACT 35, research/science & writing awards, 5% class rank in competitive school got rejected.

Not sure if you mean specifically Houston or Texas in general; Forty-nine percent of all Rice students hail from Texas, so hardly likely a bias against Texans (in fact obviously the contrary).

If you are inquiring only about the city of Houston, then I am not sure if individual city acceptances are divided proportionally, but would not imagine this is the case. I think your question would be better suited to the RICE sub-forum for specifics of that detail.

There’s plenty of OOS people with similar stats that were rejected, just look at the RD decisions thread.

^OP is in-state - unless referring to another Houston.

That’s exactly my point. There were people not in Houston with similar applications also rejected, suggesting that Houston is not making a significant impact on the decision.

im pretty sure that for Texas applicants, you gotta be ranked in the top 10 people mostly to even have a chance at rice. of the 7 people at my school who got into rice, 6 are in the top 10 and the person who wasnt is URM

^
But do you have any evidence to suggest that that’s not the case outside of Texas?

no idea, im in the greater houston area. i applied to rice kind of randomly, so i dont really know anything about acceptances outside of texas, or even the school in general.

It’s not about being from Houston. I think Rice admission was more difficult this year than last year. I’m making a pretty big generalization here but I know a few Texans at Rice and this year I have seen better local profiles get rejected regularly. I’m in Texas as well by the way (and was waitlisted).

I can tell you that I’ve seen plenty of people with better stats/credentials than me (ex. the profile you just posted) who were rejected rather than waitlisted. Honestly I think my essays were the only reason I was not rejected. I didn’t even address the prompt on one; Quirky was the goal, and I think they understood. Rice really seems to value truly quirky kids.

I got rejected from Rice (out of state). I have a great GPA and SAT scores and have worked EXTENSIVELY to improve my community. Is it hard to get in out of state? I’m so confused why I got rejected. I feel discouraged…
