Hi. My son is scheduled for a visit to Rice, but I can’t seem to find a hotel that will take him. He will be flying in late, so probably not even arriving at the hotel until 1am and sleeping there. Then, leaving early the next morning for his visit. Did anyone send their student and find a place to stay? He will be doing an overnight on the Monday night, but the Sunday night I need to find a place to take him.
I did this with my older son at other locations with no problem. I did have to pay and sign a consent/waiver, but I haven’t had any luck in Houston.
Suggestions?
Try booking with Priceline name your own price. I doubt they will give him a hard time when checking in since the room is already paid for. Especially not in the middle of the night.
Which airport is he flying into? Talk to Rice admissions, I bet he can Uber to the campus and stay with a Rice student the Sunday night also. Those kids are up late anyway.
Thanks for the replies.
He is flying into IAH. When I made his visit appointment, they said he could only stay one night which for him is going to be Monday night, so maybe I’ll ask again. I was told that if you are a Marriott rewards member that the checkin is on the phone, so that is what I’m going to look at next. A rep also tole me they can do a CC authorization and get my ID ahead of time, so he could get in without question. Of course, I just want everything done right, so he doesn’t end up in a precarious situation.
Like I said before, with my older son, the hotels around the schools I sent him to, seemed to be really familiar with the situation and had a system in place for it.
Hilton Honors also has online checkin and even offers digital room keys you can use on a phone (at some properties - not sure about all).
Lol - I sound like an ad for Hilton! Not the case…just happen to be checking into a Hilton property late tonight.
If you’d like my D is a freshman and her roommate (girls) wouldn’t mind hosting your S. She has a futon. I can send her contact info by PM.
There is a Marriott hotel in IAH connected by a tram. He could check in there right after getting off the plane then go to campus the next morning. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iahap-houston-airport-marriott-at-george-bush-intercontinental/
If it is an athletic visit, follow the instructions the school provides. There is a time limit (48 hours) and they may have a way they calculate it that is designed to insure the student isn’t on campus anywhere near 48 hours.
Thanks again for the replies everyone. I hope the Rice students will be safe today. I did contact the admissions office and they are firm on the one night stay for prospective students. He will be using Lyft for transport to and from the airport.
My son did reach out to Jam’s daughter, so hopefully that will work out. That was a very generous offer indeed.
