I have perhaps a unique perspective because I went to Cornell undergrad and UTAustin for grad school. Since money is the same, and all these schools are fantastic universities, I think you have to look at intangibles to make your decision.

Location – You have lived in Texas for your whole life. I think it is a good idea for you to experience another part of the country – it is just different. You will learn to appreciate things that you are unaware of right now. From this perspective, Cornell and Dartmouth are good choices.

Urban/Rural – I grew up in an urban area, and have lived in an urban area ever since graduating college. Going to college in a small college town, like Cornell or Dartmouth, is really fantastic. You don’t have to deal with any of the security or congestion hassles of the big city. If you are like many of the people posting here on CC, you will probably live in an urban environment the rest of your life. Again, another vote for something different – go with the traditional college town.

Climate – You have always lived someplace real warm. Learn what its like to sleep in a room where the frost is on the inside of your window when you wake up (true story). Cold weather builds character!

Size of school – Cornell is much larger than Dartmouth. This is really a matter of personal preference. You decide what you will like better.

So you can see I am biased in that I think you should choose Cornell or Dartmouth. College is more than just academics. It is also time to get out of the comfort zone you have lived in so far and experience a different environment. In that regard, if you can spend a semester abroad, that would be a great idea as well.

Good luck in what you decide. Please understand you have absolutely nothing but great choices and there is no right/wrong or better/worse decision. Pick a school and don’t look back.
