Rice vs. UT Plan II

I have been accepted to both Rice and the UT Plan II Honors program. I want to major in Biology or some other related major, and these are the two main schools I'm looking at. The problem is that Rice is costing me about $30,000 per year (with scholarship) while UT is about $20,000 per year. Is there a difference in the type of education I would receive at either school? After undergrad, I might go on to Medical school. Is one school significantly better than the other in terms of medical school acceptances?

hey pianissimo i think UT is a great choice.. I dont think that any one school is significantly better than the other in terms of medical school acceptances..

id say Rice just because of name perception by others however in the way of actual schools theyre probably of equal quality
go where you got the best deal and where you seem to fit in the most

Sall about the MCATs anyways. I would pick UT in your situation, but Rice still holds some prestige if you go there.

Rice has about a 93% acceptance rate to medical school and gives you plenty of research opportunities with the world's largest medical center literally across the street.

wow.. misterme2009 has a great point....

ut wuld be funner. rice is tiny. but for med, rice is better. most would say significantly better.

i know a guy in baylor med school who went to tamu. he said most of the med students there who went to rice for undergrad regretted it and wished they had gone to ut or tamu instead.

I've met a few doctors/med students from Baylor that came from UT
And they said it wasn't that hard to get in
Just make sure you have a really high GPA and good MCAT scores
And of course, extra-curriculars.
Plan II usually sends a handful to BCM for med school

how much debt will you have?

I'd have to pay $40 k extra if I went to Rice because of a scholarship. Wait, aarosurf, do you know why the Rice undergrads at Baylor regretted going to Rice?

The guy said that the undergrads said that they prob couldve gotten just as good of an education at tamu or ut and wouldve had more fun. However, personally i think rice is also a great school and if you are 100% sure you want to go to med school go there if you can afford it, because you are almost guaranteed admission to a med school from there.

I was sort of in your position earlier this year; i was deciding between rice and ut, majoring in bme and planning on going into med school. i ended up choosing ut because it will cost me about $15,000 less per year. I am also confident enough my gpa and mcat scores will get me into med school from ut when the time comes.

Yeah, if money is not an issue, go to Rice
It's a great school
=]

I'd say for someone who is interested in science and med school, Rice is a better choice. They're smaller, so they're going to have better advising and career services. Your fellow students will be of a higher caliber than they would be at UT, frankly. $40k in debt is a lot, though. If you are SURE you want to go to med school and you, personally, won't be paying off the debt, go to Rice. What you want to avoid is getting to Rice, realizing med school isn't for you, and being stuck with $40k in debt and, say, a liberal arts degree and no way to pay it off. Good luck.
