Richmond vs. Colgate?

I'm deciding whether to apply to University of Richmond or Colgate for early decision. I'm interested in the U of R business school, but I've heard that Colgate's econ major is pretty great too. It's seem like both schools have a pretty vibrant social scene, which is pretty important to me.

Pretty similar schools. If you’re definitely going to be a business major then I think Richmond would be the better choice. The Robins school is on fire right now. However, I’m sure Colgate’s economic major is good too. I know Colgate has a strong alumni network and strong ties with NYC.

Thanks. I know they’re both great schools. I’m a little confused about the advantages of an undergrad business school over an economics major.

Colgate is in the boonies. Richmond is in a vital city.

Which would you prefer?

Good point. I like aspects of both surroundings, but I assume the city of Richmond could provide many more opportunities. Also, its proximity to DC is pretty great.

Business and econ are very different majors. A business school such as the one at URichmond includes subjects like accounting, marketing, finance, and management while economics at Colgate is a liberal arts course of study. You are a long way away from when you have to decide. I suggest you visit both schools and try to think about what course of study you would like undergraduate.

Momfromme,

Boonies, you say?

Here is a lesson in fair but persuasive marketing for the applicant…

Colgate is in rural central NY State, about an hour’s drive from Syracuse, 45 minutes from Utica, 25 minutes from Hamilton College, an hour from Cooperstown, NY, just southwest of the Adirondacks, and just east of the Finger Lakes with its wineries and Cornell/Ithaca College/Ithaca on Cayuga.

Hamilton, NY is a charming town, roughly the same size population-wise as Colgate and is 10 minutes’ walk from the Colgate Hill. It was named in 2012 as the 11th “Most Friendly Town” in the US by Forbes. The Town/Gown integration and partnership are well developed as one can see at colgate.edu, and the campus is magificient.

So… “boonies” is hardly the full story, is it?

Radically different weather, if that’s a concern…

“Boonies” is a bit pejorative, but Momfromme does have a valid point, and I don’t think “an hour from Cooperstown, NY” is going to convince many people that Hamilton is very cosmopolitan. I personally don’t have anything against a location such as that, but I definitely agree that the locales are pretty dissimilar.

Another consideration is on the huge parents’ forum thread about reasons for crossing off a college after a campus visit. When it comes to Colgate, there does seem to be a theme of “too isolated”.
