So, after a lot of thinking, I’ve been able to narrow down my list to Richmond and Colgate. I know they’re both great academic schools, so my decision at this point isn’t going to come down to academics.
At this point, I was hoping everyone here could help out and tell me some of the other things about the schools. Things like how the people are, what’s the party scene look like, how big the sports scene is, what’s campus life like, how big is Greek life, how’s the food, all those kinds of the. The stuff schools don’t talk about on their website. The “intangibles” so to speak.
I’ll be up at both schools in the coming weeks for overnight stays and accepted students days to get a feel for myself of course, but I figured why not reach out on here and see what I hear back from people!
I like Colgate a lot, but would choose UR for lots of little reasons that add up.
Colegate’s town would be fine for a while, but 4 years?? A little too small. The higher % of friendly southerners vs. Northeasterners. Flat campus vs. hilly. Weather better. No toothpaste jokes the rest ofyour life. People will know where it is (location is in name).
None of these alone would sway me, but they are all sort of " tie-breakers" and they all point in one direction. That said, if there is something intangible u just like about Colgate, then go there…it is a very special place and this is not a slam dunk in either direction.
Two great choices with more similarities than differences. Your overnight stays should clarify things for you, but here are a few things to consider
For weather, location, food and dorms - Richmond
For alumni network, career services and a tiny bit more prestige- Colgate
Sports and preppiness - about even.
Greek life more dominant at Colgate
Let us know what you decide!
One thing to consider is that Colgate has been an elite school for generations, while Richmond is sort of a newcomer. As a result, the alumni networks and that power school reputation is very much in Colgate’s favor.
While Payscale ranks are not conclusive, they do indicate that Colgate grads are more plugged into the power corridor. Colgate is #16 nationally while Richmond is #137, even with a business school. Colgate has neither a business school or engineering school and is still #16.
Colgate is set in an authentic four-season countryside location and its adjacent village is listed by Forbes as one “America’s [15] Friendliest Towns.”
