I'm debating whether to attend UW or Oregon State University. I would absolutely love to attend UW for its prospective medical programs. The only thing setting me back from choosing UW is the price for it. I would have about 35,000 for my freshman year in loans. Any ideas on what to choose? OSU is an okay school, I haven't visited it yet but I know for sure UW is my top choice.

I’d pick UW as well, but $35,000 is a ridiculous amount of money for one year. If you really want to go to UW, move to WA and attend a local community college. Look into the requirements for residency and fulfill them during your year at a local CC. Then, apply to UW for your sophomore year.

That is too much in loans for any school. $35k is around the max you should be looking at for all four years, not just year one! UDub is not financially workable for you.

I agree with noimagination (unless money is no object for your family…) also, 35k is not a “ridiculous” out of state price…I think that’s actually pretty typical for any OOS uni.

^ Obviously money is an object… or we wouldn’t be talking about loans.

35k a year is reasonable for out of state prices. Trust me, I looked at U Michigan which was about $50,000/yr.

Go to whatever your best instate school is (or cheapest option) and do very well there if UW med is your target. Going to UW for undergrad won’t raise your chances for its med school, it may actually make them worse from what I’ve heard, since they can only take a capped amount of people from their own undergrad and that’s probably their largest applicant pool.

Thanks guys, this is really good information. I’ll defiantly take it into account
