right now im a junior in high school and i have been pretty much taking 'hard' classes, but the problem is due to this my gpa has suffered A LOT. last year i got straight b-'s in AP euro, and im just doing horrible in calc now too (b-). my unweighted gpa is a 10.611 and a 10.944 weighted.

my classes now are honors chem, ap bio, ap calc ab, and modern american lit

next semester they will be ap bio, us history (regular), spanish 3, and ap calc bc

i really want to finish calc BC, so im in touch with math because if i take the ap test for just calc ab i think i may do bad just because i wont be doing math for a semester, but on the other hand i dont want my GPA to suffer any more because i know in calc BC the best i could probably do is a b, MAYBE b+ at best, but i have been pretty much getting b's and b-'s in calc AB, and pre-calc. i just calculated that if i got a's in every class the best GPA i could get unweighted would be around a 10.9 or 11.0, unweighted. GPA is pretty important so do you think the smarter thing for me to do is just drop calc BC and take two other classes which i could get an A's in easier. ill probably end up getting an a- in ap bio, a b+ in honors chem, and an A in modern american lit btw. so i dont want to drop calc bc because i want harder classes on my transcript, but at the same time i want a better GPA because mine is bad now.

You have to find a way to balance between the two. Getting one or two Bs a semester is not going to kill you as long as you are taking hard classes, but if you’re getting mostly Bs or Cs then you might want to change your schedule. Also, never go into a class thinking you’re going to get a B, go into every class thinking you’re going to dominate it. You’re mindset is putting you in a hole before you even begin.

Colleges don’t want to see mediocre grades in higher level classes. They want you to challenge yourself in courses that you’re actually interested in and get good grades in those. And obviously they expect stellar marks in lower level classes.

As Rainmaker said, you have to strike a balance. Everyone knows that AP classes hardly resemble actual college courses, but even so, they want to see you challenge yourself for the sake of learning (even if this isn’t the sole motive). Taking all honors/AP just shows that you want to impress colleges. It says nothing about what you actually are academically interested in.

Try not to worry about grades too much, you’ll be happy wherever you go. Good luck!

well i think that if u continue ur classes and manage to get atleast a b+ in all of them ur chances wont b harshely affected.colleges will c that u r taking difficult classes n so if u dnt get A+ everywher its ok.but b+ is minimum. gl.

I disagree with BDl108 in that taking all AP/honors courses is just to impress colleges. What ever happened to wanting your challenge the most you possibly can, just for the sake of learning? Even if that means that your unweighted GPA takes a hit.

im in the same pothole. I take a very rigorous courseload full of aps and honors to the point where my gpa suffers. Its like a 3.1 uw, and a 3.8-4.1 w (not sure). id be glad to get some advice on this too. Colleges I look forward to include NYU,BC,BU,UMDCP(in state), UMBC(in state), Umichigan etc. I know some of these are reaches for me but I’m doing whatever I can. Minus the SAT and others, do you think my gpa alone would bring me out of getting into these schools.

the translation to a 4 point scale would be 3.537 unweighted currently, and 3.648 weighted,

well i talked to my counselor today and she suggested if there was any possibility of getting lower than B then for sure drop it, and even a b+ would not be good enough since the GPA is too low so i DID drop calc BC (i still took calc AB and will be taking the AP test)

anyone disagree and think i should have kept it?

collegeapp09 i agree with your point to take classes just for the sake of learning, but the situation is that my GPA is already a bit low and i dont think it could take anymore ‘hits’ at this point

and mr.spicy yeah your weighted is really low at a 3.1 but if you have some good extra cirriculars such as varsity sports and such, plus a high SAT or ACT i think you may have a shot
