“Rigor” is determined by answering the question “did you take the most rigorous classes offered at your school”. i.e. you took 8 AP classes. Does your school offer 10 or 25 AP classes? We offer only 5 AP classes. If a student from our school takes all 5, they take a more rigorous schedule than the student from a neighboring school that also takes 5, but their school offers 15.

Well, my school offers 9. I’m not taking AP Calculus because I’m bad at math and would definitely get a D or something, and I already took Honors U.S History in 9th so I couldn’t take AP US.

I had the most rigorous courseload out of anyone at my school in 11th and 12th, and 9th and 10th, well I also had the most rigorous courseload available to ME, not necessarily everyone else. I couldn’t have honors spanish I because the school that I went to in 9th didn’t offer it at all. I also couldn’t have honors spanish II because they couldn’t fit it into my schedule.

but yeah, most rigorous at my school.

Looks like you are in good shape.

csdad is spot on. I would say though that after 10 or 11 APs, it doesn’t matter how many your school offers. So if your school offers 10 and you take 5, not good. If your school offers 25 and you take 10, that’s probably fine, assuming that approximates the most rigorous schedule you could have, which it probably does at around 10-12 (and depending on any internal restrictions your school has).

thanks. are my grades really that terrible? I still ended up with a decent GPA. if they excluded freshman year I’d have around 3.86/4.4 something. damn.

No one said your grades were terrible…

Grades are hard to evaluate. You have more B’s and a C which isn’t something I’d want to see. However, are you in the top 10% of your class? Has your school historically sent students to top schools? If yes, how does your GPA compare? Top 10% at a bad school won’t get you in. Top 15% at a really competitive school is probably fine. 10% is a general guideline though if you aren’t sure.

Well I just had a reallyyy hard time in math and science. the A’s that I had in the humanities were sky high, though. Also, my school is one of the best schools in Florida. we don’t rank either. ok, so maybe not cornell. What about one of the SUNY’s or CUNY’s?

btw I’ll be majoring in english lit, if it makes any difference. In 10th I had a 98 average in English, a 100% average in 11th, and now I’m at 100% as well. not sure about 9th, though. but it was definitely an A.

^^ SUNY is fine as a safety school, but I recommend that you select higher-ranked schools.
Your stats aren’t that bad to be going to SUNY.

If your school only reports an A, it’s only an A. Anyways, what Mikey said is right. In your case, the C will hurt. It doesn’t hurt however to have several more reach schools given that your credentials aren’t really bad enough to prevent you from getting into any one of them.

what the heck happened in geometry you seem so intelligent did that just get you for some reason?

all right, cool! anyone have any suggestions for possible match schools?
and macklemore, yeah, I had an extremely hard time in Geometry for some reason. I did well on the concept evaulations, notebook checks (duh) and did all my homework, but got low grades on the tests/quizzes because I have test anxiety. I mean seriously, I would go home and teach myself trig in a week and be able to solve pre-calc problems and all that, and would even make up my own geometric problems at home, but I just…for some reason, had a difficult time in the actual class. don’t know why. chemistry was a struggle as well! but I liked AP Bio.

It sems like you have difficulty with visual memory, which is important in getting high test grades in visual subjects such as math & science. Doesn’t surprise me a bit that your best science subject is Bio, which is much more verbal in nature (more like a social studies class in some ways) than Chem. or Physics. Majoring in English is a very good fit for you!

Yes! While I am not a math/science person, I do have my niche. I’m great when it comes to writing, analysis, coming up with abstract ideas, philosophy, and retaining information (history, bio, literature, etc.) I can almost see all of that inside my head when I take the tests. But with math, formulas, and all that, I have an extremely hard time. It just doesn’t stick. Especially when I take tests. I get extremely nervous, and then I can’t remember anything.

And while I may not have the greatest frosh/soph grades, I did have a pretty decent upward trend, and I have an interesting story to tell. :)

I have very cool extra-curricular activities and recommendations, and I will have a phenomenal essay. Hopefully that will boost my chances!

anyone else have an opinion?
