So... I always wonder how people with 4 or more AP's do a competitive amount of extracurriculars and also do well in their classes? Or do they just have no ECs at all or barely any? How do you handle it?

Also, do you find it weird that so many freshman on CC have a ton of AP's? Because my high school doesn't let us take most AP's till Junior year, and same goes with honors classes. I don't know whether to feel jealous or happy, lol.

Ugh I know right! My school has a very small amount of AP’s. I think literally all you can take is AP Eng & APUSH junior year, and AP World History soph. For seniors, the only AP classes are Lit and Calculus. o_o My school sucks.

When I was a freshman, my senior friend had a freshman in her AP Cal class… I have no idea what math she is taking now.

@ lullies: i thinkkk thats kind of good for you in a way. i mean taking advanced classes is great (knowledge and everything) but if your school doesnt really have much APs colleges cant penalize you for not taking as much as other people.

my freshman year school, freshman couldnt take APs. in my two sophomore year schools, there were no APs unless you were a junior (AP Bio) or a senior (AP Eng, Calc, French, Pysch) and there were no honors classes at all . and NOW in my junior year school (which i hope will be my senior year school too), you can take AP Bio and APUSH. but since i wasnt in honors the year before, i cant take any APs . so senior year will be FULL of APS.

back to your question, it really depends on their school (about freshmen taking APs) and those people with a ton of APs … i really dont know the answer to that. but some CCers may be making it up so you never know

I have the same confusion as you…I was looking at the schedule thread and most of the replies had mostly full AP schedules. How do people handle this without going crazy? I’m planning on taking 3 APs my senior year, AP Latin IV, AP Psychology, andi AP Literature. Should I take one more? I thought this was going to really challenge me, but do I need 4 or more to be competitive at top-notch schools? Help!

To the OP: Well, I’m currently in 4 APs as a junior, and I have been doing around 8 extracurriculars with a lot of dedication put into everything. I’m just used to handling the work and my extracurriculars and I suppose I’ve just learned to become better at time management.

I am in 4 APs and Honors classes this year. I tried doing some ECs (mostly clubs), and I didn’t think it was worth the combined stress. I already did enough after school with debate. I can see how some people can manage, and there IS enough time to do both, but I’d rather spend my free time reading having fun.

I’d consider myself someone who does both. Trick is not to sleep that much. I probably get 4 hours of sleep on average in the “normal” months, 6 hours when there’s nothing to do, and some weeks when things really pile up, just 3 or so hours.

The thing with maintaining both is that it’s a really delicate balance. It’s wrong to be an inactive member of a club, but it shouldn’t absorb your life. I skip out on meetups sometimes when I really have to get work done, but I attend what I can when there’s time for it.

As Apoc314 said, it’s all about time management. Do that well, know your priorities, and make good use of every second, and you can have it all (including sleep!).
