RIP Lisa Marie Presley

This news makes me terribly sad. :disappointed:

Wasn’t she just on the Golden Globes this week?!!

How sad. I saw earlier that she suffered a possible MI. She looked pretty weak at the Golden Globes this week. 54 is much too young. RIP

I can’t help but wonder if the “cardiac arrest” was related to a suicide. She had allegedly been completely devestated by her son’s death, and who could blame her? But maybe not at all, perhaps she truly had a health crisis.

So so sad. RIP indeed. Poor sweet Lisa.

So sad. Emotional stress, depression, and broken heart syndrome can affect one’s heart health
RIP, Lisa. Only 54 years young.

I read that she had struggled with opioid addiction. That stuff is so bad.

I thought about “broken heart syndrome” as well. I know heart disease was in her family history. The stress of emotional anguish can certainly take a toll.

She wrote a piece on grief 5 months ago regarding the death of her son. It was heartbreaking. She wrote it for National Grief Awareness day.

“Broken heart syndrome” is very real, and she had struggled most of her life with trauma. Of course now her own children will be dealing with trauma and grief of their own. What a :broken_heart: cycle.

Very sad. Just cannot imagine losing a child

I lost my mom and dad passed less than three weeks after. Broken heart syndrome for sure. It’s been a while now, but the grief like Lisa mentioned, doesn’t go away and you don’t move on. You learn to live with it (sorta).

I always describe my experience as becoming so exhausted by it, you eventually just become resigned to it. Not “over it.” Moving forward, sure, but not leaving it behind either. You carry it with you on some level always.

So sad
 complications from prior surgery.

Prior abdominal surgery can put people at risk for SBO later down the line. My DH has had two surgeries related to colon cancer. He has been hospitalized 3 times since then for small bowel obstruction. It’s scary when it happens.

When you have surgery, the body can create scar tissue that can wrap itself around the small intestines, essentially disabling the process of moving intestinal contents through the body. This causes extreme pain, eventually vomiting, and in some cases, can cut off blood flow to the rest of the intestines, causing massive death of all intestinal tissue on the other side of the obstruction. This is a deadly complication.

She must have been in terrible pain-so sad that there wasn’t anyone with her who could have gotten her to the hospital in time.

I asked my daughter, who will be doing fellowship in bariatric surgery. She said their are standard SBO’s, but in a case where it is directly related to weight loss surgery, she told me this

“That’s a regular SBO (very very common but almost always resolves without surgery and is not usually an emergency) but if they’re saying it was directly related to prior weight loss surgery, that’s when part of the intestine gets stuck in an anatomic defect we create when doing a gastric bypass and gets strangled in that hole.”

I don’t ever remember Lisa Marie being overweight, especially not to needing weight loss surgery. Maybe I just never saw pictures.

I recall her being “not skinny” for a time, but she didn’t seem obese. Maybe she stepped away from the spotlight when she had weight issues - or maybe she had the surgery when she wasn’t as obese as the typical patient who has that surgery.

Aren’t there requirements (related to severity of the obesity) that must be met before a patient can be approved for bariatric surgery? Hard to believe she would have met that criteria.

I wonder if her fame/wealth played any part in her being accepted as a bariatric surgery patient. Then again, she may have stayed out of the public eye during a period of extreme weight gain. In any case, this news was surprising. I was expecting to hear that she had heart issues related to years of substance abuse.

My daughter said yes, there are guidelines but didn’t say what. She’s at work so I probably shouldn’t be texting for details. I googled and saw one site that said a BMI of 35 or over qualifies.

I suspect that there are doctors who will bend the rules

Absolutely. Michael Jackson did not just purchase his propofol off a drug store shelf
