Rising Senior Chances at Good Computer Science Schools? WILL Chance Back.

I really messed up my GPA in 10th grade, but I have worked really hard Junior year therefore I have a HUGE upward trend. Also I have challenged myself throughout high school, mostly taking Honors and AP courses.

Application

I know my teacher recommendations are going to be very good. One of them is from my AP Programming teacher. The other is from my AP Lang teacher.

My counselor recommendation is also going to be pretty good because she has helped me out a lot and she knows how eager I am to get into a good college.

In my essays I will explain my situation and talk about how much I have changed and how rare it for students to have this type of turn around in there grades. I am going to work all summer on them, and make sure the one for Cornell is special, because my chances look very slim. I will also admit that there is no excuse for my 10th grade GPA and that instead of giving up, I persevered.

Personal/Other

I am white, from a middle class family.

I go to regular public school in Maryland.

Planning to major in Computer Science.

I have have shown interest in these colleges by going to college visits, college fairs, and talking with there admissions officers.

These are the Universities I want to know my chances for. Yes I realize my chances for Cornell are low, but I hope my essay, drastic shift in GPA, SAT score, and EC's will give me a shot. I just want to know others opinion on my chances. I do not know what more I could have done my Junior year to show that I am just as smart and capable as every other top-tier student. Also for your convenience you can just copy the list and put my chances next to each one.

Universities

Cornell University (Early Decision):
University of Maryland College Park (In-State):
New York University:
University of Michigan--Ann Arbor:
Georgia Tech:
University of Illinois--Urbana-Champaign:
University of California--San Diego:
University of California--Berkeley:

Anybody wanna chance me?

I think you will get into UMD, but I’m not sure about Cornell since your GPA is low and compared to the other students applying for CS at I am assuming the engineering school, that is extremely low. Also I would advise not to write about you pulling up your grades because I feel like adcoms will look at that and think, “But we have so many other people that maintained high grades”.

Also the thing with an upward trend is that yes, it’s more favorable than having consistently low grades, but it doesn’t compare to have consistently high grades, which is what adcoms would like the most.
