Rising Sophomore Answering all questions!

Guys…transferring isn’t hard unless the department you want into doesn’t have room or has little room and big demand. You shouldn’t have trouble transferring if you take the right courses and do well. Consult your adviser.

Blizz - how was Family weekend last year. Did you parents attend. Seems like jammed packed activities and what are the “not to be missed” activities. Thanks

@ Blizz Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer all of our burning questions. Do you know someone who has lived on the “quiet floor?” My son is looking into requesting that. He’d like to know how that works. He’s very social, loves to have fun, but doesn’t want to have to deal with a lot of partying (he’s heard stories of wild weekend parties and vomit several nights a week in the bathroom from his older sister from her NON CMU freshman dorm).
Also is it mixed classes as opposed to all freshman? He’s been at boarding school for 4 years and MY concern (not his) is that he’s going to have a hard time living with all freshman, the majority of whom have never lived away from home. He loved the dorm life in pre-college though so that’s not a huge concern. Thanks.

@kleibo - My parents couldn’t come, so i didn’t pay much attention to the events going on that weekend. I can only suggest you see whatever performance Scotch n Soda have for that weekend, as they never fail to impress.

@MomForAll - I supposedly live on a quiet floor, but I really don’t see what makes it special. Essentially our RA told us that we were to not make ridiculous amounts of noise and not be loud enough that people can hear you in the next room. My floor, along with the other non-floors in my dorm building don’t really face a loud noise issue, since you would really have to go out of your way to bother people with noise (which some have tried, and the RA shuts them down).

I’m not into the party-scene, and I don’t plan on drinking at any point in my life due to my own personal reasons. CMU has a party scene like any other college, but this is an academically rigorous school, so it is on the side and should never effect you if you choose for it not to. Of course there will be that drunk guy coming in at 2am who vomits in the hallway, or those guys who try to drink in their room, but you don’t have to worry about crazy drunkards getting in your way every night. Unless they are feeling especially “special”, the students who drink and party save it for only Friday and Saturday nights.

A lot of your introductory courses will be all freshmen, with very few upperclassmen. I have taken a few Gen-eds with more upperclassmen present, but freshmen will be more prevalent in your courses as a freshman.

I also find that a lot of people don’t make a big deal out of living away from home for the first time. Everyone minds their own space and respects their roommate. I in particular have the worst case of all my friends in terms of a roommate. I do not like my roommate at all, but It’s fine since I have several friends on my floor so I do not need to stay in the room with him more than necessary and just ignoring him most of the time saves me lots of stress. But of course, the main respect of privacy and belongings is still upheld between us.

@BlizzBlazer How many people do you that got admitted from the waitlist to SCS, IS, or H&SS?

Thanks, Blizz, for your insight on the quiet floor and on roommates in general.
One question I think I didn’t express clearly, was, on the quiet floor, are there a variety of classes living there, or just freshman? Which freshman housing options have a variety of classes living on the same floor ?

Thanks, Blizz, after today’s revisit, even in the miserable weather, our son bought the sweatshirt and I submitted the deposit. We are very happy for him. Might be a little late for him to get the dorm he wants, tho, right?

Eh, you would be surprised by the amount of kids that send in their deposit the last day of April. It’s still possible.

And the weather…don’t get me started. It was beautiful here for 2 weeks or so and then mother nature feels like toying with us some more…

Do you know if there’s a limit to the number of AP credits you can get at CMU?

I don’t think there is, and if there is, it’s a pretty high cap. One of my friends came in with over a year’s worth of credit and was able to finish in three years with a double major in CS and Math thanks to it. Thinking back I got two histories, chem 1/lab, physics 2, calc 1 & 2, and a CS class waived.

Great, thanks! A lot of colleges I’m looking at unfortunately have pretty strict limits and I’ve been looking for one that’s still academically competitive but also has a good AP policy.

thanks for answering these questions!

I did the IB, and for my HLs, I got 6, 6 and 7. So I do not get the full credit. However, I heard there are placement tests on the blackboard. Could I take them and get the complete credit for my HL subjects which are Math, Physics (already have full credit) and Chemistry?

Also, I didn’t take any official exams for Computer Science, but I’m sure I can do well on the basic placement tests. Can I take any CS placement tests? And will I be able to get any credit for those?

Thanks!

Hey there!
I wanted to ask these things -

Is it hard for me to transfer to SCS from CIT? I’m admitted to ECE. Or is it easy to double major in ECE and CS?

I sent my deposit on 24th :frowning:
How screwed am I? Would I get the lease desired houses?

Thanks! You’re doing a great job helping us out here :)

Hey, ECE rising junior here. In response to iamthebist, 1. a lot of people do double major in ece and cs, and I don’t think scs is that difficult to transfer to so long as you do well in the major courses (251, 213, etc.). And 2, is this May 24? It’s a toss-up, you might end up in a really terrible room or they might move you into an apartment (nice rooms).

LFCYNWA: From what I remember, there are calc placement tests that you’ll have to take anyways. There are also optional cs placement tests and a biology test online. And yes, if you do well on those, you should get credit. For other subjects, you might want to email someone. (I don’t know much about those).

@roostersign - I meant April 24 ; May 1 was the deadline to accept the offer. And if I am moved into an apartment, it would cost me more right? :(

OH, if it’s April 24, you’re definitely/most likely not screwed. Also, Donner - not as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be.

@roostersign - are you really sure lol? I mean, I just gave the deposit 6 days before the deadline.

Back when I was a freshman Donner was considered one of the best dorms to be in. :(

I went from living first floor Donner (sweet) to the top floor of Scobel (oh god such small rooms plus walk up the icy hill) my second year.

@iamthebist: I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of people who ended up sending deposits on the 30th. :)
