I have an idea for the prompt “Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.” I could write about my love for political satire and humor and how I first got into it in 5th grade and how it shapes who I am. However, that involves mentioning my favorite show South Park and how it uses political humor. (controversial at times) Is this a safe essay to write?
ps no one steal this idea lol
If I were an admissions counselor (I’m not) I would have no problem with this topic especially if it is well-written
I do not find it risky to speak of South Park. But don’t make the mistake of talking about SP and not you, right?
Yea Im going to talk about its effect on me and how it made me who I am
Many essays - including the ones accepted to HYPs - utilize mundane or bizarre topics. The key is how you deliver.
Not a problem at all. Admissions officers are real people you don’t want to sound like every other applicant
But SP alone may not make the impression you want. Any other examples other than popular TV?
Adcoms may not want everyone to be a carbon copy, but they still need to see you understand they’re reviewing you for college.
Yea the Daily show and the colbert report @lookingforward
How about something from other than TV?
@lookingforward i read the onion too
Pulling my leg, perhaps.
You could universally write about anything. A topic like yours must have been the essay of at least one applicant among hundreds of thousands before. However, just like how @viphan states, it is how you deliver it that can make a topic even like procrastination (beaten to death) look instigating of a positive reaction.
Im currently working on it and the current structure is how it effects my daily life (conversations with class mates) andI include some examples of my jokes to add an extra personal touch on it.
I was with you up until post #13. I’m not sure that the most important essay that you will have written up to this point should be the place in which you try out new jokes. What if the reader doesn’t think they are very funny?
@MidwestDad3 I wouldn’t consider them lol jokes, they are witty political jokes like that the clintons are the underwoods from house of cards and Jed bush is trying to convince everyone he is not his brother. The jokes are part of the story I am trying to tell so its not forced in.
Sorry, but I think post #15 proves my point. Be really careful.
