Risky topic?

I’m thinking of writing about and experience with cousin with a mental illness for the 5th common app prompt because it sparked a period of interest in behavioral health for me, but I heard that mental disorders are a risky topic to write about for the common app essay and should be avoided. Is that true?

Is there a way to handle the topic so that it leaves the reader wanting you on his campus?

Well, it’s not YOUR mental illness, so I think it’s OK if you can answer “yes” to bjkmom’s question.

My daughter talked about supporting her cousin after the death of her brother. I think it’s one reason she got a good bit of aid from her school. It’s a big deal if you can make a difference in someone else’s life like that.

thank you!
