Hi there! I’m a female who recently got accepted to the Game Design and Development program. Got rejected from Northeastern and waitlisted by Boston U, so it looks like I’ll be going to RIT! I’m so excited to talk to anyone else going. Also, I haven’t been able to visit yet. Does anyone have opinions on the campus and student life there?
Hi, I am a parent (sorry, I am sure you would prefer a student view). Here are my two cents; My D and I were on a tor a year ago. Yes, the buildings are brick and RIT is 20 miles away from Rochester. However, I felt like each building was a little jewel - you would enter this plain brick building, and there was a fun, interesting interior to each building. I like the idea of that in a cold winter. I don’t like the “1/4 mile” from the dorms to the academic buildings in the winter - frankly, I don’t see why they don’t build a tunnel/enclosed but unheated walkway there.
The people we met were VERY friendly. Our guide was great, the facilities available for the students were top-notch, and my favorite memory; my D is in the arts, but when we went through the “engineering/networking” building (or something like that) there was a meeting going on (social group) and ALL the people in the group turned in unison behind the glass wall (we were in a corridor outside, but there was a glass wall to this room) and waved/smiled at us. I just found that really sweet and welcoming. My D found the YouTube channel helpful: https://www.youtube.com/user/5RITstudents/playlists?sort=lad&flow=list&view=1
There are other YouTube videos available from RIT as well.
I hope that you are able to attend an “Accepted Students Day” - those days can be overwhelming, with so much information, so I recommend that if at all possible, you bring at least one parent. Read through your entire acceptance packet, go through the videos on YouTube and read more about RIT online. That way you can be more prepared for the day, and know, perhaps, that you would really like to see one of the specialty housing floors when you visit. You would also have more targeted questions to ask, which could be really helpful - I just discovered that (in the local “reception for admitted students” that the final deadline for the speciality housing “questions” is earlier than my D would need to finalize her dorm selection otherwise.
Best of luck! Fantastic that you were admitted to that program. It is one of the MOST competitive to get into on campus, and that along with their amazing Co-Op program will make a lot of doors open for you later.
Hi @JanessaM Congratulations on being accepted to a competitive program! My daughter is a freshman at RIT. She has enjoyed her time on campus and seems to find plenty to keep busy. Have you joined the facebook page for accepted students? That is how she met her roommate and I’m happy to say they became the best of friends. I hope you get a chance to visit campus before move-in day.
i know i got accepted, but i have not gotten official words from them…i applied way before 2/1…what is happening?
You should call admissions. Regular decisions should have been mailed out by the 15th. How do you know that you were accepted? Regardless, you should have received notification.
for incoming students/parents, RIT has put together a fun series of short videos. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdPBsGyZIovPOEmBBZPoCSGQdXJDOBUxk
Be sure to watch the one about the wetlands, and the one about snow. Having a wetlands means it can be very buggy in the warmer months, and lots of students last fall were complaining of mosquito bites.
The video about the snow explains they get snow often, perhaps some would say very often, but not that many really heavy snowfalls. That is what I’d heard from a friend that lives in the area, and that is what my D (soon to be home from freshman year) experienced.
Good luck to all.
