So I just got denied from northeastern University, leaving my only two options for college RIT and Cal state Northridge (Sign Language Interpreting major for both) I really am tired of being in hot and dry Southern California, but the Rochester seems like the ICE AGE. I just don’t know what to do. If Rochester was closer to NYC or something I’d be more willing to go, but it seems like the school isn’t really close to anything I’d be interested in. Any advice or input is appreciated.
@asinineayo My son was just rejected at northeastern after being deferred. Yes Rochester can be cold for a lot of months, but view it as 4 short years instead. They go fast. Rochester has a great community. I went to RIT. It is a great size college community. Everything you need is close by. Pretty campus once you get past the bricks. Excellent reputation in the US for many majors, especially in sign language. We live in North Carolina now and my son was born here in NC. He was accepted to RIT and is seriously considering RIT even though he is not used to the snow. Hope that makes you feel better.
We’re in NJ where it’s cold and snows, but not as much as Rochester. My S, though only a first year, seems to have embraced the cold and the weather. Keep in mind that the tunnels allow movement between a lot of the buildings without having to resort to going outside.
They don’t seem to lack for things to do between clubs, hockey games, and on campus events. The city of Rochester, while not NYC, has its share of museums, seasonal farmers markets and the area is beautiful (nothing like a walk along the canals or Genesee River).
My first impression of the campus was “bricks”, but spend a little time wandering campus and you realize it’s really beautiful - surrounded by woods, green spaces between buildings, sculpture and interesting architecture.
Because of your holidays, breaks, and other non-school times, I would suggest in your case to be closer to home. Rochester NY sounds like it’s a long and costly airplane ride that you might have to do often, for that reason (if you only have those two choices), I think I’d suggest California for logistic reasons. Beauty and comfort have no real place in my mind when I make decisions, but that’s just me.
Thanks for all of your answers!
