RIT has you list three majors on the application in your order of preference. To those who have either been accepted or attend RIT, was just wondering what your experiences were in being accepted to your preferred major or whether it is common that some /many will be accepted to less than their first choice program.

I think it sort of depends upon the competitiveness of the program listed as the first choice and your stats. Each program has it’s own admissions criteria. Some are more competitive than others (higher gpa, ACT/SAT). It is not at all unheard of for people who fall well below the averages for a particular program that they select as their first choice, to not get it. However, if there are more spaces available or the criteria are not as stringent for a second choice, the applicant may be admitted into that program. My son was admitted into the SE program (his first choice) but his stats were aligned with the averages (3.8 gpa, 32 ACT).

Good luck! My son is working his butt off but really learning a great deal and enjoying it immensely.

RIT has a wide variety of majors with different levels of acceptance standards. The best example is the Engineering/Engineering tech distinction. A lot of people who are on the fence about whether or not they can make it into a true Engineering program apply with Eng. Tech as their second choice.
