Im trying to weigh the +’s and -‘s of these schools to decide which is best. Ive read that the engineer SAT score is typically a bit higher than the schools entrance so ive made this list accordingly. My main question is for my intended major of electrical engineering, which school provides the best education? Now im not asking for the best school as there are many factors that will decide that but which offers the best education for me to be ready for life. Out of RIT, Clarkson, and SUNY Binghamton. Thanks.
Well I’ll go first since I might be one of the few people here who is afamiliar with all 3 schools. I think all three schools could give you a great education.
- RIT seems to have good co-op programs. I work closely with a really sharp grad from 1980s, and I've worked with a few younger co-ops/interns too.
- Clarkson is my alma mater (Mechanical Engineerin, 1980s). They had a strong EE program, and based on the alumni magazines / web info it is probably still the case. There seems to be more and more project-based learning at Clarkson (and elsewhere), a trend that I like. Clarkson works best for those who are OK with cold weather and small town.
- I was accepted at SUNY Binghamtom Engineering in 1980s. Then after graduation from Clarkson I lived nearby. I took 3 classes at the Engineering grad school. It is often on lists for Best Value, especially if you are a NY resident.
Thank you for the input. It is appreciated.
Have you visited any of them yet?
Of the 3, we visited RIT. We liked it and it is great for engineering if you can afford it. It is a co-op based learning environment. You would graduate in 5 years (only paying for 4, having 2 semesters of paid co-op). My daughter liked it but preferred research based for chemical engineering (her major)
As the previous poster said, Clarkson is more project based learning. My daughter wasn’t interested in the geographic location. It’s a smaller school in a more rural area that is colder and has more snow.
We didn’t look at Bing because they don’t have Chem E. They are a great school and we know lots of kids happy there… in other programs and not engineering. Kids we know looking st engineering who visited there said the engineering department paled in comparison to other schools they looked at.
I would suggest looking at University of Rochester while you are looking at RIT, since location wise it’s close by. My daughter liked it a lot and the engineering dept tour was really nice.
I would also suggest looking at University of Buffalo if you are looking at Bing. UB has a larger, newer engineering dept. Their engineering tour was our favorite of all the schools we looked at. My daughter was accepted ED to Cornell, but it was actually really hard for her to turn down UB because she liked it so much for engineering.
I have been to Clarkson, RIT, and University of Rochester, i dont know personally if im a smart enough engineer as the entrance SAT for a college yes i could get in, but engineers SAT’s have to be somewhat higher than the entrance which is why i dont know if i can get into University of Rochester (SAT is 1380), I will look at university of Buffalo as well. Thank you.
I"m partial to Clarkson, have a good friend that attended and a niece that just graduated. Seems like it’s great at getting students ready for the workforce and excels at placement in internships, coops, and jobs. They get a lot of accolades:
Clarkson’s placement rate is one of the highest in the nation.
One in five Clarkson alumni is a CEO, senior executive, or owner of a company.
According to Payscale’s 2011 College Salary Report, the average starting salary of Clarkson graduates is $57,900 placing us #17 out of 1003 universities listed in this independent compensation benchmarking service.
According to the U.S. News & World Report, we’re one of the top tier national universities. U.S. News also ranks our Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering as one of America’s best undergraduate engineering schools, and our School of Business supply chain management program as #14 in the nation.
Our innovation & entrepreneurship program ranks among the top 15 in the nation, according to The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine.
Clarkson’s digital arts & sciences program is the most innovative in the nation, according to the International Digital Media and Arts Association.
I think their size is perfect. In a different location they’d be a much more popular school.
The Clarkson placement office has been excellent for decades. I notice it on a lot of lists like … https://www.bestcolleges.com/features/best-college-career-services/
All three programs are great. IMHO, the choice comes down to which campus and student body you feel a fit for.
