The criteria vary by state. Some want essays, etc, some just want stats. The US government funds it, the states administer it as they see fit.

Be warned that the second website listed above is specific to Illinois. The first website gives links to state websites for more state-specific information.

Oops, sorry - I should have tagged that second one as Illinoiis-specific. Thanks, Fireflyscout..

I received an e-mail reply from the Michigan education department that administers the Robert C. Byrd for our state. In Michigan, students are nominated by their principal who sends in a package. My D received $1500/yr. Hooray! However, the source noted that federal funding for the scholarship may be eliminated next year. George Bush is pushing to eliminate all federal funding for scholarships or need-based financial aid named for Democrats. He has not included a single scholarship named for a Republican on his elimination list. If you all want to keep your scholarships, write your Senators and Congressmen!

Wow? That is incredible. How can he do that? ahhh...just another reason for me to hate him...

so, the Byrd is endangered?

It doesn't surprise me. The Presidential Freedom Scholarship program said that federal funding is not included in next year's budget either.

My son won the Byrd Scholarship in Kansas. The application was quite extensive and included a GREAT DEAL more than stats. He was the only one in our district to win this award, and he was ranked #4 in his graduating class. ~berurah

Does anyone have any more info on the cutting off of the Byrd? I am quite worried now... well then bush can just pay for the rest of my scholarship out of his own pocket... :(

My son was advised today that he had won the Byrd Scholarship in Indiana.

I just got a letter today from CA...

ditto, got mine at the end of last week (cali)

got my rejection from cali
