Does anyone have any information when the Byrd Scholarship funding will be resolved? It is currently not funded for the coming academic year, but that has been the case before, and in all previous years it has eventually received the funding. When might Congress vote on this? Thanks.

Whoa really? I didn't even hear about that. Do you mean it's not funded for 2008 or not funded for 2009? Cuz I just applied for this last week.

It seems like Congress is always a bit slow about this. Bet it would get funded a lot more quickly if it were called the Patriot Scholarship.

Lol. (10 char)

bump........

I don't know anything about the funding - sorry - but D has been nominated by her school (in California) and I was wondering how many of the nominated students actually get the scholarship? (Assuming the funding comes through, of course.)

I'm from NC and I received a letter at the end of March telling me I was a recipient for this coming school year...

Found out for Wisconsin last Thursday. The 2007 awards are listed if you google "(fill in your state) State Scholars". Our showed that about 33% became finalists. Good luck!

Yes, that's fine for everyone, but as of a short time ago, Congress has not funded the program. My D received it last year, renewable for 4 years. But we will all be out of this wonderful $ if Congress doesn't override Bush who has not included it in his 2008-2009 budget.

Senator Byrd is still around, the Democrats are in charge of Congress, Bush has left it off previous budgets (possibly because it's named after a Democrat, thus my suggestion it be named Patriot Scholarships), and it has been added in later.

I, also in NC, received letter end of February saying I would receive the scholarship. This lack of funding is news to me. Why would they continue to announce winners if it wasn't going to be funded?

Ca sorts students in order first by unweighted GPA, then by SAT score (the old one) In my Ds year they ran out of money by 4.0 1260, every one above that got it. It is always late funding, like Nov/Dec for fall

In NY State the deadline for applications was only March 3rd so I am assuming that we won't hear for awhile. Only 3 kids at my D's school qualified to even apply, she had the highest SAT's off all 3 but second highest GPA. Whatever that means anyway...She was 95th percentile Nationally in SAT's, does that mean she has a good chance?

We're in NY state also. D heard in early summer last year. They continue to announce winners in all the states because it is a continuing program, and it has continually received its funding late. Right, Firefly?! Last year D's school got the payment in the end of the summer, but before the Fall semester began. So, it was definitely before Nov or Dec. In this economic climate, it's hard to say what will happen. That's why I asked in the original post. I guess we'll just have to wait to find out. It always used to be hard for me to wait for stuff. I have really learned to do it in the past couple of years! :)

Correct, franglish. Because of the name of the scholarship, it's become a bit of a political football, but the funding has always come through.

As far as criteria for the above posters, it varies quite a bit from state to state, as does notification. In Texas, it is strictly numbers based - on GPA, rank, and SAT/ACT scores - with notification mailed in early June.

I'm in NC also and was nominated by my school, though I haven't received notification of anything yet. Does this mean I didn't get it?

No. It just means you haven't received notification yet.

Every state runs on a different schedule. For example, Oklahoma applications aren't even due until April 11, 2008.

ferrel812,

I'm sorry, but announcement emails went out Feb 23 for NC.

that's okay! thank for letting me know, huguenot!
