every state does this differently, but I assume each would try to use a uniform method. After all, some schools don’t weight GPA. In WA, my D was required to include her transcript, so if they want, they can recalculate it themselves.</p>
<p>I don’t know about the new year’s winners in New York, but my D received her letter certifying her third year of being a recipient, so NY is in the mix.</p>

<p>Recipient letter arrived yesterday!! We have until July 15th to get everything back to the state dept. of education, but this is a real blessing.</p>

<p>In NY, the scholarship winners are determined by a weighted average of GPA and SAT scores, but the GPA is limited to certain subjects. There are about 400 scholarships awarded in the state. They are awarded on a county basis by population, with a minimum of one award per county, no matter how small.</p>

<p>Notification will vary by state. For example, Texas only notifies recipients and it does not publish a list of recipients anywhere.</p>
<p>There are serious problems with the organization of Ohio’s program. Last year 481, awards were given out, this year only 108 (the state still has the same funding). Basically they have 1000 scholarships given out at any single time (funded 1.5 million per year). Most of these theoretically are renewal ~750. Theoretically then, about 250 new awards should be given out each year; however, OH’s program is way off balance with a certain class every four years getting many more awards than another class that get’s only a small number (aka mine because I had the stats to make last year’s cutoff but not this years because there were 373 more scholarships last year) </p>

<p>I called in for CA Byrd scholarship two weeks before the notifications were sent out. They told me the cutoff and that I had received the scholarship. So, yeah, try calling.</p>
<p>Mythbuster, I agree with you 100%. I think its rediculous that there are so few new OH Byrds this year. My daughter did receive it but the 108 this year is just way too small for a state this size.</p>

<p>Son received a letter on 7/2 saying he was an alternate for the Ohio Byrd Scholarship. Didn’t know there was such a thing? Earlier in May he was told he did not receive one.</p>
<p>My D is also an OH alternate. I guess it is too much to hope that additional money will shake loose for these kids? Does anyone know if additional funds have become available in past years?</p>
