D got a mailing from them today. Went to their website and now I am intrigued! Does anyone know anything about the Honors College at Indiana U of Pa? Anyone visit?

I got mail from them today too! I had never heard of this school before, so I’ll be paying attention to this thread.

I am not hopeful that anyone will respond. I checked out their message board and there has been no action on it for months and months!

Wait wait wait!!! I am going there next fall. I got really excited when I saw this post!!

Did she get a mailing for the Summer Honors Program or just for the Honors College? :)

I can’t answer for the OP, but I got mine for the Honors College.

gifted gothic- For both. She works all summer at a sleep away camp, so can never do academic programs during the summer. I would love to hear what you have to think about the program.D has been looking at small LACs. IUP is much larger than she normally would be comfortable with , but I am wondering if being in the Honors College would make it ‘feel’ smaller. any thoughts?

I found out about the HC when I was a sophomore in high school. My history teacher received a pamphlet for their Summer Honors Program, which is designed for rising juniors and seniors. You spend two weeks in Whitmyre Hall, which houses the Honor College as well as the Honors College dorms. It’s a really unique building… I don’t know of many other places that have classrooms where the students live.

The HC isn’t a typical Honors College. I keep getting information from other schools about their Honors Programs, how I can get early registration, “honors” level classes, etc… but nothing compares to the community of the HC.

Instead of taking required freshmen humanities such as Freshmen Comp, you take Honors Core. In these classes, you discuss pretty deep philosophical questions. One that came up in both years I attended SHP was “What is good, what is evil, and what, therefore, should we do?” If you’re in English Core, you answer it based on literature readings. If you’re in History Core, you answer it based on the actions of people in the past.

I am really excited to start next year. The HC also gives out decent merit aid. Also, they have a good Enhancement Program which allows eligible students to do internships or study abroad with little or no cost to them.

If your D or S is a freshmen, sophomore, or junior, I definitely advise them to try the Summer Honors Program. It was a lot of fun the two years I went, and it gives you two weeks of what college is like (with some restrictions, naturally).

giftedgothic-thanks for the info. wish D could do the summer program, but can’t b/c of work! Do us a favor and let us know what you think of the program once you are there next fall!!! Thanks and good luck!!

It is really easy to just have friends in the HC. My HC friends hang out with a lot of HC students and a few IUP students. A lot of kids from my school go to IUP, but not the HC, so I might hang out with them, but the majority of my friends are going to come from the HC. Whitmyre is a unique community where everyone mingles with everyone, and a close-knit group forms.

I know a girl that’s getting her masters at IUP after getting her undergrad there and going through the Honors College. She did her undergrad in three years and had a great experience. I’ve mentioned before on this forum how I think it’s the best honors college in the Pennsylvania University system. IUP has an open house coming up next month- I think it’s on the 10th.

kathiep-I saw the open house, unfortunately D will just be getting back that day from a trip to Costa Rica with her Spanish class, otherwise we would go!

holliesue,

As a PA resident & parent, Cook has been on my radar for a while because I can comfortable say it is a financial safety. In our household, we will only consider 4 state or state-related schools for all 3 of our kids based upon the bang for the buck. Cook is #2 on the list for each kid as it stands now.

IMO Penn State (Schreyer) is best for Engineering majors.
Pitt is best for my humanities kid (who is leaning toward Philosophy and Pitt excels at that)

I don’t know about OOS tuition.

As an in-state, my only hesitation is location – not being near a major urban hub & the intern opportunities the urban hub offers.

Like you, I hope giftedgothic reports back next year.
