**Rochester 2019 RD Discussion Thread!**

@jmek15 It was on the admissions website. When I try to find it now I don’t see it, but I remember it being there before. It didn’t say that you had to apply by that deadline for merit, but it recommended doing so. Has anyone else seen it?

I remember reading on the website that applying by December 1 gives you a better chance of merit aid. I can’t seem to find that statement now. I don’t think it was buried deep in their website. I was reading about the various merit awards when I found it.

There was something about December 1 suggesting that having your app in by that day improved chances for merit aid. Similar statement was made about the interview. Priority review was mentioned in some handout/part of admissions packet, I believe…but the materials were from last year that were in the folder handed out at the campus tour…betting that is where the confusion stems from. Then there was an ED2 option that came a week or two after the Dec. 1 deadline was met for getting an application in…which also seems to have caused some confusion (it came via email…but don’t think it was posted on their website, nor on the common app). Overall the admissions process at Rochester feels very genuine (unlike other schools, such as UM, who have made contradictory and/or just plain disengenuous statements to the many prospective students who were deferred this year). That said, the whole college admissions process this year seems to be “off” in terms of information dissemination, moving deadlines, and other switcheroos that a number of universities seem to playing (unlike last year, which was the year of the Common App fail).

Thanks for the answers!

hello.
i have applied for heop and am going in for an interview in the next week. i have already submitted my application but will the interview be considered even after my application has been submitted?

The wait is a killer :’(

D is in (phew) ED, her dream school. Her scores were ok, grades decent, extracurriculars varied with some leadership. Information they got from her interview, and only her interview, was cited in her acceptance letter. I know this is the RD thread, just emphasizing interviews matter here.

Agreed jamesjunkers. This wait is terrible! Ugh! Trying to be patient for our daughter. Hoping, hoping…

Was just on Collegeweeklive with U of R rep who said if you applied by December 1 they will be sending out decisions in the mail next week!

Do you guys think it’s possible to get a Skype interview at this point? Still on the second stage.

Most colleges have deadlines around 2/15, idk the specifics for UR, but I doubt it

My daughter’s school has still not gotten the midyear report to U of R even though she applied before December 1. I sure hope they do it soon.

@bamonty

First of all, congrats to your daughter for getting into her dream school!

It’s enlightening to hear that your daughter’s interview was cited in her acceptance letter. I understand that UR makes a reference to a specific aspect of an applicant’s package in their accpetance letter. For my son, it was his essay.

Hearing that they referenced your daughter’s interview I think definitively answers the age-old question “Does the interview matter?” At least at UR, it’s apparent that it can be a deciding factor.

@stresseddad That’s great news. Do they also give online notification?

I hope the interview isn’t the end all be all. My son’s interviewer asked him some very odd questions like, “Are your parents married?” “Are they happily married?” Why would they ask those questions? Are they looking for a “story”? At any rate, the interview was decent, but nothing earth shattering. It’s all the other stuff that my son has to commend himself.

I do think Rochester looks at the “whole package” and that no one thing (like the interview) will be the be-all and end-all. So I wouldn’t worry, @sbjdorio. Those do sound like some strange questions!

My daughter’s interview went well, but that wasn’t what was mentioned in her acceptance letter. Instead, it focused on one of her ECs. Since the EC adviser was one of her rec letters, we figured he must have written a very nice recommendation indeed.

I didn’t interview. I hope this doesn’t hurt me that much. I did sign up for one but had to cancel a couple of days before due to a schedulilng conflict. I just hope Rochester understands that it is difficult for some people to arrange interviews among all the other things that they do.

Son pushed send button on his application at 11:38 pm on Dec 1, so not sure it that counts as getting it in by Dec 1. I guess we’ll see. His status shows him at Stage 4 - in committee.

@Sapphire50 - that should definitely count as submitted by Dec. 1. The deadline was midnight December 1st - any application submitted throughout the day on Dec. 1 should count.

@Ostinato1689, what “deadline” are you referring to? I still cannot find anywhere where Rochester claimed that applying by December 1 has any advantages. If someone could post a link to any form of priority review existing this year, that’d be wonderful.
