Rochester isn't prestigious?

Even though Rochester is ranked higher in US news college rankings than both NYU and Boston College, how come hardly anyone recognizes its name? Is it because is not prestigious and not a house-hold name?

I have copied your question to the "college search" and "college admission" forum. Please excuse me, but I think people over there can give you a more objective answer!

Drinkingmilk: I totally agree! It's so annoying that when I tell people I'm going to U of R next year, they say "alright," or "okay," in a condescending tone. Although, Rochester being somewhat unknown has its pros -- the people go there for the actual school, not just for the NAME of the school, like at the colleges you mentioned.

Many also confuse it with RIT... that's kind of annoying.

:( !!!!!!!

i know right...RIT and UR are 2 different schools with a lot of differences. one, for fact, RIT's tennis courts suck...lol. and about being prestigious...it's just that they don't advertise as much...but otherwise, idk, but ppl who are more educated about universities know about rochester, but the average person knows only the top 5-10 universities and that too most near the same area they live...not many ppl go to UR from CA for example (they do, but not many)...idk...i'll have to check out the "objective" answer too...
