Even though Rochester is ranked higher in US news college rankings than both NYU and Boston College, how come hardly anyone recognizes its name? Is it because is not prestigious and not a house-hold name?

I'm going to UR next year, and honestly I think it depends where you're from. In the northwest almost everyone recognizes what you're talking about when you say UR. But a lot of people in the south and midwest, unless they're familiar with college rankings, don't really know what you're talking about. I also applied to Rice U, ranked #17, and NO ONE knew what I was talking about. NO ONE. It doesn't mean that it's not pretegious or not a good school, but rather that a lot of people who haven't researched college admissions only are familiar with really famous schools (ex. Harvard and Yale) or local schools. A lot of people have never heard of Dartmouth, and it's number 9 I believe. Good luck with wherever you go, but I hope you choose UR:)

UR is prestigious. Who cares if people don't know the name? If you're happy, then go!

behappy99 gl at urochester.....i wished really badly i could have seen you there, but oh well.....you seemed like a great guy/girl
lol wait your a girl right?

WOW....good guess! I am a girl.
I know URochester is a great school, and I'll go there for sure. But I know there're tons of people who aren't so sure about URochester, and I hope they can be convinced by this post! lol

dont worry what they think...i would have done anythign to get into that school..its a great school and you should be proud...so cares what other people say

yeah for some reason BC and NYU have more a namebrand than UR, thou i think UR is better... BC probly for sports and NYU is just everywhere inlcuding internationally

its just the Rochester isn't NYC or Boston

I've always thought of UR as prestigious, and I'm from TX!
