Accepted into rochester and fordham undecided, and newhouse/arts and sciences (dual degree-undecided) at syracuse, I must decide between the 3. I want to eventually major in liberal arts or a social science while taking pre-med classes. However, at syracuse I would do this in the college of arts and sciences while having a separate major at newhouse. I would either like to become a doctor or journalist and cannot decide between the 2 careers.

If you have any advice about which college to choose or on the career paths in general, please share!

*all would be roughly the same price for me.

It seems like Rochester would easily meet your liberal arts needs with the pre-med classes. From what I heard you can sort of make your own major at Rochester so you could take classes for both while at UR and make up your mind by the time you graduate.

Congratulations on your acceptances. Am not familiar with Syracuse or Fordham as my D didn’t apply there. She’s a freshman at U of R and loves it. Science programs there are very strong and competitive with other schools. I don’t know if journalism is offered as a major; check the college website, but alot of social science majors are offered. The great thing about U of R is that you can double major or minor in completely different areas with the advice of a college advisor and planning carefully your course selections which you can’t do as easily at other colleges.

I assume you live in NY and thus know enough about the different cities / locations. Truth is you may not go pre-med or journalism. Where would you want to be if you decide on a different path?

From what I know, UR lets you pick your path with more freedom.

Journalism at Rochester isn’t a major by itself; it’s one of the concentrations in the English major. It’s quite strong.

Since Rochester has no specific requirements outside the major, except for a cluster of 3 courses in each of the academic areas (humanities, social sciences, and math & natural sciences), it is quite easy to major in humanities or social sciences while still completing your pre-med requirements, which also serve to satisfy your science cluster requirement.
