Rolling Admissions?

Does U of M still offer rolling admissions? I see mention if it in the years previous, but don’t see the words “rolling admissions” mentioned in this year’s application information.
My son will be submitting his application tomorrow. We aren’t sure if he will be waiting for U of M until winter like he will be for Madison or if it will come sooner?

My understanding is that it’s fairly unpredictable. He could hear back in a few weeks, or not until January. It depends on the strength of the application and what they are looking for.

Good luck! My son recently submitted his application, too.

Thank you! Neither of us went to college, so this entire process is new territory. We are so excited for him to possibly get into a college like U of M! His application is pretty competitive, but we do know that most kids who apply to U of M have pretty competitive applications. So we are remaining cautiously hopeful.
Good luck to your son too! Fingers crossed they are both earlier rather than later

No problem! It’s a little different from the way a lot of schools do things.

My husband and I both went there so we are kind of biased, but I think it’s a great school.

@mamadtb As a freshman this year my experience from what I went through was applying sooner was better. Some of my friends waited a couple months while I waited 2 weeks. Although, I submitted my application late September while they submitted theirs in November. Best of luck to your son! If you have any questions about the application process feel free to ask away on this thread, I would be glad to help!

For schools that have rolling admissions I don’t think that you know when you are going to hear back until you hear back. One daughter applied to a rolling admissions school that we expected would reply quickly. It ended up taking about a month longer than we had expected. We were not too stressed out but just wondered what the delay was. We found out “through the grapevine” that someone in admissions was sick and they were just behind a bit. Eventually we got good news. Hopefully you and your son will also.

My understanding is that the University of Minnesota (main campus at least) did away with rolling admissions about a year ago. Not sure if UM followed through or not.

Had a family member apply to UM Twin Cities when rolling admissions was in effect. Received an acceptance very soon after file was complete.

Rolling. Took one of my kiddos a few days and another almost five months during the same the admissions cycle last year. Varies by college at TC location as well. Just get a complete, thoughtful app in as early as possible. Good luck.

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is no longer on rolling admissions. It does offer EA & RD admissions. Recent change from rolling admissions.

If in doubt, check UM-Twin Cities admissions website.

Thanks, guys! He did apply to the main campus in Minneapolis. I’ve read the website a couple different times and keep hoping I’d see the term “rolling admissions” again. It makes sense that they did away with it in the last year or so because I believe the date on the last link I saw it on was from 2018.
I guess this will just teach us a little lesson in patience!

Sorry, I didn’t know they changed it from just this past spring. Well, I can say that this will work far better in many ways having gone through the process. Being in the dark for so long with no answers is trying. For one kiddo it was a really long time waiting 7 months and feeling pretty awful, comparing one’s stats with others he entered his program, wondering what was up, to in the very end getting the exact placement in a competitive program that he sought. Good luck!

Is U of M using an admission portal? My son applied last week and so far hasn’t gotten a link for the admission portal and if you go to the website it says the tracker will be available in September. Has anyone who applied received anything from the school?

No email here yet either. I think the tracker just isn’t ready yet.

DS applied almost a month ago and hasn’t received anything for getting into the tracker yet.

FWIW, I called the admissions office this morning and was told they haven’t started reviewing applications yet, but will within the next month, and then students will get decisions “on a rolling basis,” though it sounded like it would be similar to last year where it wasn’t necessarily in the order received. If anyone gets a different answer or additional information, I’d be very interested to hear about it; otherwise, I guess we will see what happens in the next few weeks.

You’ll start to see people admitted around late September. Most of my friends who applied early August or early September heard around that time. I applied late September and heard back mid October. I recommend getting your app in sooner or later. Those who apply early with slightly lower average stats for the big 3 colleges: CSE CBS CSOM have a better chance as you’re not competing with some higher level applicants. At least that’s how I felt. I’m sure there are other factors but just my two cents as a current freshman. Also get your housing in Asap. November 1st is when it opens and you should be submitting the housing application right away. Otherwise you may get stuck in some of the least favorite resident halls. Had some friends that got stuck in bailey due to applying late. The earlier the better!

The tracker is up as of today! No decision yet, naturally, just a notification that the application is complete.

LOL I was just coming here to say the same thing!

As they load all the tracker accounts over the coming days, they will read:
“All of your required application materials have been received by the November 1 deadline. Thank you! All students who submit complete applications by the November 1 deadline will receive their admission decisions in Application Tracker by January 31.”

The last few years, acceptances have started rolling out right around October 1 (they usually happen on Saturdays early on). On a Friday if your tracker wording changes, you should check the next morning after 9:30 CST. If it changes to one line saying “All of your required application materials have been received by the November 1 deadline. Thank you!” that is usually a good sign.

DS got the email yesterday…well…I noticed he got the email yesterday because I use his Chromebook at night when I’m watching TV since my laptop broke. I run out to show him and say, “Look, you can log into the tracker now!” Zero excitement. Zero. He said he’d look at it tomorrow because he was tired and wanted to get to bed.
