Room for an Artsy Kid at Syracuse?

I come from a very artsy/hippy/indie school on the west coast thats also incredibly hard academic. Do you think i can find a group and fit in at Syracuse? I'm nervous that the frat scene and the big school vibe will not be what I like, but i really like the programs and facilities there.. help! all comments welcomed...

thats the thing. its so big that youll find your niche.

I was an artsy hippie kid when I went to Syracuse many moons ago. I did not find my niche and transfered. Maybe things are different now, but somehow I doubt it. Transferred to NYU, the village was perfect for me. What other schools are you considering?

the school is too big. youll find other people like u. dont get discouraged. and if u really dont like it then by all means transfer like ^.

i'm also considering pitzer (such an opposite of syracuse), and i'm waitlisted for connecticut college and kenyon. I was also accepted at BU, but only to the school of general studies which is not a very good school. Vassar was originally my first choice. I really like the oppertunities available at Syracuse but the type of kids around me is even more important to me, and the ones at syracuse seem too normal for me.

Hey Neon. I'm feeling a lot like you. Different situation (conservative prep school over here in the east). I'm worried about finding my niche and I'm expecting college to be awkward at first. They say the first three weeks everyone tries on personalities and acts fake. I think Melo is right tho. If you're willing to stick it out, you'll find a few kids like you and be happy. Just look for the best in whatever situation you find yourself in.
I'm not really a "free-spirit", but I'm not a frat party kid either. If you're unhappy look me up. I'd be happy to lend a friendly shoulder, and I think a lot of us will be feeling the same way.
Good luck, Neon, I'm sure you'll be ok.

most of those so called normal kids arent that normal at all. and actually. tell me your definition of normal.

artsy hippie kids are normal too. you guys arent any different.

You will find plenty of artsy kids at Syracuse. You have to be kidding. Syracuse is well known for having one of the strongest art and design departments in the country. It may not be as well known to the average person as their School of Communication but certainly, it is within their top three schools, and it is a big school. You will find plenty of kids like you there.

AHAHAHA Yay for artsy/hippie/indie kids! I second Threekids, if you want to hang out, look me up! (Name's Fawn.) I'm hoping there'll be more artsy and less snobby kids of syracuse too...(I come from San Francisco, so I'm used to lots of ...interesting people!) And I'm sure there will be, though when I was there for Campus Visit I saw enough of those expensive purses with that funny pattern on them to make me gag. Then again, one of my best friends has one of those bags. XD (And it's not a very good way to judge people, I know.) As for the whole big school vibe...I'm going to go for a residential LC, so I can experience the whole community feel ya know. And I heard Syracuse is about the size where you WILL see friendly faces occasionally as you walk around. (VS like UMichigan, with 20,000 undergrads, 40,000 total!)

P.S. Wow I've never heard of that 3 wk fake thing before. How odd!

would you mind saying which lc you are joining?

Aha! Well seeing as I haven't accepted SU yet (final decision btwn SU and UMichigan tomorrow!) I haven't chosen my LC for sure yet. But i can tell you what I'm choosing between! One of the two mostly likely is "Languages, Cultures, and Arts" because it will help me learn foreign languages, and hopefully there'll be a more diverse group of people involved. I'm also considering the "International Living Center"...Just because I think it'd be super cool to meet someone say from Japan, become friends with them, and go visit them in Japan someday!! But I can do that even if i dont live in the center (I can stake it out...and pounce on an asian guy who has nice hair and clothes and thus is obviously Japanese!) Also, it's supposed to be for people who like to travel, speak a second language etc, so I'd like to find out more about the difference between the two communities... "Discovery" and "PATHWAYS" also seem interesting... but the whole foreign language/international peeps/ diversity thing is most important to me.

so neon u still havent told me your definition of normal.
