Room Service

I read StudLife today and was appalled to learn that Wash U is bringing room service to the S40. Does anyone else find this a bit disturbing? Maybe I'm ignorant but I haven't heard of many colleges doing this. Told my friends (who are in other schools) about this and they were incredulous and didn't take me seriously. Opinions?

I’m sitting down with a StudLife right now and just read the article…I’m a little dumbfounded. We are graced with what is literally some of the best campus food in the country. Now a 3-minute walk and a 5-10 minute wait is too long? I’m not saying I’m opposed to the idea, but it seems pretty ridiculus to me.

i know other schools have similar services. my friend at emory says she can order sushi from one of the dining halls and get it delivered to her dorm room. i dont think its that uncommon

I saw online that Wash U has a laundry service where they pick up your dirty clothes and then wash/iron them… It was so shocking to me.

Yeah, “Wash U Wash.” It’s pretty popular: I’d say half of my floor does it. I was always ashamed to not know how to wash my clothes as a kid, but I learned this year. Isn’t learning how to wash clothes one of the quintessential aspects about college?

Seriously??? I never thought that it was so tough to wash clothes. Sure, ironing actually takes time and effort, but I didn’t think over 1/2 of the campus does this service.

I doubt that half of the campus uses WashU Wash. I live in a modern dorm and my floor seems that have many spoiled kids. I would hope that my floor is an anomaly, but I can’t say for sure. Whenever I ask people why they use WashU Wash, they give me the same answer: “Washing and drying takes too much time.” Give me a break.

I too live in a modern dorm and I think most, if not all of my floormates do their own laundry. I imagine Wash U Wash would be good for ironing formal clothes (since irons aren’t allowed due to fire hazard), but doing your own laundry is not difficult or time consuming. The only frustrating part is when other people put their clothes in the washer/dryer and just leave them there, although my floormates/RA’s actually addressed that issue and now we can feel free to put someone’s clothes into a bag if they’re left in the machine for too long.

I’ve never had that issue haha. If someone leaves their laundry in the washer and forgets about it, then it’s fair game for me to put it on the table/floor. That’s what timers are for.

I’d say 2-5 people per floor use Wash U Wash.

As for room service, sometimes you have flu and are too sick to leave, etc. It would also be nice having South 40 food delivered to village without a 10 min walk each way.

This will only be legit if they deliver to Whispers.
It royally sucks when you’re in the library late at night and get hungry, since it’s a long walk to get to any food.

Depending on the hours and type of food provided in the new Lopata gallery, Johnson, that problem may be solved.

I actually know a lot about the lopata cafe (they’re doing a test run thursday if anyone’s interested).

But I’m talking about 1am situations when everything except for the village and s40 are closed.

There’s no way lopata cafe will be open that late.

Lopata
Mon-Thu 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
Fri 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

I hope it has some decent food/options…

The menu (it’s posted already at the site) looks decent.

And supposedly there will still be chili cheese dogs on tues/thurs.
Frankly, that’s all I care about (I’m clearly a true washu engineer…)

I’m a little bit disturbed by the notion of room service, too… but my disturbance is quieted because this is an initiative by students, not the administration. If fellow WUSTLians want to start a student-run initiative, then go for it.
