Don’t worry about that too much. This year Baits is an all freshman dorm (it wasn’t in previous years) so the social atmosphere should be good. Since everyone is new, people will be willing to introduce themselves and be more social.

You can cross 2 out because it will be social with all the freshmen living there. And how “social” or not a dorm is also depends on you - whether or not you’re willing to go out and meet people. If you’re shy it doesn’t matter if you’re in Markley (considered the most social dorm on campus) or on North - you will have a hard time making friends anyway.

So yes, it sucks that you’re gonna be on North and will have to take a bus to central every day (especially in those long cold winters) and wait 30 mins on the weekend for a bus to get to central. Apart from that, it’s just like any other dorm on campus. The building/rooms aren’t any worse than those in Markley, East Quad or South Quad.

There are some nice things on north, though. I saw the duderstadt center on my tour and the library that’s up there and they both seemed really cool. I heard there’s a video game library. And even though it is kind of out there, it’s away from the hustle and bustle of central and it might be nice to have a quieter place to escape to after being at central all day for classes. There are lots of trees and stuff up there and I thought it seemed really beautiful and nice, I’m considering moving there next year.

Thanks for the encouraging words about Baits. I will make the best of it. At least I know I will not be alone. But seriously, why would they put so many freshmen at the opposite end of campus from where they hold all the freshman classes? Couldn’t they at least offer some sections of the most common freshman classes up on north campus? At least the pre engineering ones like calc, chem and physics?

The College of Engineering is in North Campus right? So it can’t be that bad for CoE students (although freshmen from CoE will probably still be taking more classes at central campus). Maybe they put freshmen there because it’s the worst droms, and as you become a soph, junior, and senior, your dorms get better.

It’s funny, someone mentioned being worried about being paired with a sophomore as a freshman, I am a junior and I got paired with a freshman. XD We are both incoming students so we’re still essentially on the same level, but it’s kind of different since she’s just coming out of high school and has even less college experience than I do. But I think it’ll be fun to find our way together! Hopefully she isn’t intimidated by me or anything, she didn’t seem to be. I’m really excited for school now. :)

ETA: Ryegye, almost EVERYONE except engineers and transfer students want to be on central campus, it just isn’t feasible to put them all there. The theory that freshmen are the low men on the totem pole probably has some truth to it. Cheer up, you have three more years after this one to live on Central if that’s what you really want. And you have an advantage that I don’t in that you will be forced to learn how to use the bus system, I have NO idea how to handle them and it’ll probably be a while before I figure it out. :\ You’ll probably ride by in a bus and see me walking around in the cold freezing half to death because I won’t have the experience of riding the bus every day to learn how to do it. :P

(Kind of silly, but hey, someone’s got to try and cheer you up. )

Honestly, I got a strange feeling UMich doesn’t do its roommate assignments by random, because though my roommate lives on the other side of the country, up until like a year ago, she used to live two miles from me. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

CaptainWasabi09, I agree with you. I got put with my friend from high school, even though we both went in blind. Keep in mind that I’m out of state too and he is the only other guy from my school in my dorm. Something’s fishy here.

I agree. Turns out I am in the Max Kade German house. My intended major is Computer Science, but I did place out of German through AP and wrote in my essay that I plan to study there at some point during college, so the decision to place me there does not seem random. I have no idea what to expect. I don’t know how many people who live in the building are actually in that learning community.
