Hello i would like a different roommate.

I got assigned W03xx, but i wish to know how to change a roommate??

Do i click reassignment of room waitlist? or roommate waitlist?

I dont mind the floor im in since i think it is renovated....having said that, I wouldnt want to risk NOT living in jester, so im worried "reassignment" might mean switching buildings entirely.

help?

basically what im saying is, by being on the roommate change waitlist, will i be removed from the room? or will my roommate be removed from the room and i stay?

You should NOT use that form right now. You are going to want to talk to DHFS directly and make an exact plan with your roommate too. He has to want to move out of your room, or you are going to need to move to another Jester room that has no roommate.

This is a difficult thing to do right now, since there are so many students in supplemental housing. These are people who don’t even have a regular room, and they are the first to get put in ANY openings in ANY dorms. So, either you need to find somebody willing to do a simple swap, or wait it out. There is no way to say “I want Bob in my room, and I want to kick Mike out”. Unless you have a set place for Mike to go (like, where Bob came from), then they won’t help you.

School hasn’t even started and you want a roommate change already?

So i cant choose a roommate anymore? So how would simple swap work?

And by wait it out you mean till the start of school or end of school?

Ok so i guess ill remove myself from the waitlist.

Why do you want a roommate change? Are you unhappy with the current person? Or do you have somebody else in mind? Where do they live?

Are you currently assigned a roommate?

Yes im unhappy with the one i have and i had someone else in mind.

Well, you’ll need to talk to your current roommate, your desired roommate, and your desired roommate’s roommate.

If they all agree to a swap, you can talk to DHFS. They probably won’t be very happy about it right now since it’s so early in the semester and a TON of people are asking them questions about moving dorms, etc. But if you have this all worked out, they will be more inclined to help.

If everybody agrees to it, your roommate can be swapped with your desired roommate’s roommate. Then you get your desired roommate, and the other two can deal with each other. But they ALL have to agree to it.

The odds of this happening before move-in are unlikely, and after move-in people are settled and really don’t want to change rooms.

What’s so bad about your current roommate? If there is a problem with them, your desired roommate’s roommate may not want them as a roommate.

Also, what dorm is the desired roommate living in? Hopefully it costs the same as Jester, or else DHFS won’t like changing around people’s bills.

/hopefully this post wasn’t too confusing, I didn’t have names so I had to be really general with my nouns.

Well i still do not know of someone FOR SURE.

But i do know i want a different roommate, because I know our personalities and socio-environments will clash.

Besides, I AM paying for the dorm so I dont see why I can’t choose to live with someone I think i will build more of a connection with.

What’s the big difference? How have you gotten to know your roommate this well in not even a whole day?

That’s the danger of the random roommate. I chose somebody I knew from high school, not a “best friend”, although he is one of my good friends now. I knew he had a girlfriend so there would be no sexiling issues. I knew he was social and would want to do things like go to football games, hang out with friends, etc, and not spend all day studying. I’m a big party-er and I’ve had a few little events in my room, but he’s okay with it, he’s fine with me coming in drunk at 3am, etc. If I went random roommate I could have ended up with some quiet nerd who just wants to do his comp sci or engineering homework (no offense to engineers, I just know you guys have tons of h/w) and never have any fun, and then try to get me kicked out/moved because of my “disrupting” his studying or sleep or something.

^If all 4 people agree to the swap, what are the chances that UT will go ahead and do it?

As far as I know, they are willing to do it. My friend “A” had a horrible roommate who was just a big problem for various reasons, he filed to get a new roommate. “A” knew “J” and so “J” left his room and moved in with “A”. Apparently “J” had a bad roommate too, although both those bad roommates didn’t get put together.

But since they had this plan in place, at least as far who would move into “A”'s room, they accepted it. This was also in like November though, when supplemental housing had already cleared out and there was less demand for rooms.

Vertigo - If you wanted to room with someone else, why didn’t you request it before the deadline? Do you know the person you were assigned, or are you making suppositions based on a name?

Yeah, I’m not in that situation to where I’m with a bad roommate. I haven’t even contacted my roommate yet. It’s just that a good friend of mine ended up getting a dorm he didn’t want, and would rather live in Jester (where I’m in right now) than in his current assignment (Brackenridge).

@Why Two Kay: Well i am going to consider swapping somehow! And I am the same way…

@QueenofEverythin: I didn’t request it because I didn’t know of anyone I wanted to room with and my orientation was PAST the deadline. And I know him through FB, although not “in person”.

I need someone to agree to swap thennnn…

Brackenridge isn’t bad at all! It’s part of the Brackenridge/Roberts/Prather (BRP) complex, and is a fine dorm to live in. I’ve never actually been in there, but the BRP dorms are all basically the same, and Prather was great. The rooms were large, the windows huge, the bathrooms really clean, and very few people shared each bathrooms. Plus it’s basically 10 feet away from Jester and you don’t have to wait for elevators or walk up or down stairs for 10 flights.

I know, it sounds pretty good, but he’d rather live at Jester since he couldn’t get into the two San Jac or Duren, and I guess just likes Jester more.

Why not be open minded and get to know the roommate you were assigned to? You might find that even though you come from different backgrounds, you enjoy each other’s company - or at least that you can live peacefully together.

Ok wait, you’re in Jester W03xx? I know that jester is coed, but I thought they meant boys on one floor and girls on another, because I’m a girl. It’s not a huge deal, I just didn’t know.

It’s not by floor in Jester. The floors are co-ed and tend to be grouped around the bathrooms for that gender. But sometimes your neighbor can be a guy if you are a girl, etc.

Oh ok, thanks. So is it like that for all floors in jester East/West?
