hi im a freshman at vandy this year and i have been assigned a random roommate in the commons. my roommate is an international student from asia and im having some problems staying with him. for example, he always keeps the temperature at 85 degrees, leaves used tissues around the room, and cant even speak proper english. i know you can switch roommates after 2 weeks and im seriously looking into that. what is the process for that? which roommate will you be assigned to? will you stay in your same hall/room or will you have to change? i would really appreciate it if you could help me out with this.

You are not alone. My son’s roommate is from the states but spoke only Chinese during move in. He had absolutely no interest in meeting let alone getting to know our son or anyone else for that matter. He did speak to us enough to tell us he didn’t like TV so we had to get really creative with the set up and I went out and bought wireless head phones. He also turned the heat on when we left for the evening but we just turned it off when my son returned. I told my son that they are going to have to compromise and that means both of them. He is definitely not going to be a friend but hopefully they will find a way to coexist in the room. My son did meet some great guys on the hall. My son really likes his dorm and his room so I am hoping things work out. I guess we just never thought that someone would come to a college and totally want to isolate. If you want you can PM me and I will give you my sons contact info. Good luck in the meantime and hopefully things will get easier!

Sounds like my old roommate. He was from Jersey. Try to stick it out. Diversity is important. GL

You can talk to your RA to request a room change. The RA will try to make it work between you two, but if not, you can get a change. One roommate will stay and one will leave, not sure how it is selected. You get paired with someone else who had a roommate issue, so.
