My d and I are confused about the roommate search. If you don't pick a roommate by may 1 does the housing deot automatically match u with someone? Right now her profile is open for other people who are looking for roommates. Does she need to change that as of may 1 so that housing will just match her up. It's a little confusing on the website. Thanks! She definitely wants someone in capstone program who also is requesting to live in capstone and that's listed on her profile, but does she have to find someone by may 1? I apologize if this is a dumb question.

They’ve changed the system since I came in as a freshman, so I could be wrong. However, if she doesn’t list a roommate by May 1, then they should just pair her up with someone randomly. (They go off of listed preferences of halls and profiles.)

I was open to finding other people through messaging on the actual housing site my freshman year, but I didn’t find a roommate by May 1. When I got my housing assignment, I saw they had put me with someone who had similar times for waking up/going to sleep, didn’t smoke, and wanted the same dorm. It wasn’t completely random, but I definitely didn’t choose.

Last year, it worked the same as AUGirl stated. Most Freshmen do not pre-select roommates. The preferences provided to USC are used to find a match. You do not need to do anything by May 1.

//\ Thanks! They do have roommate match where your profile is open to others who can then email you if they r looking for a roommate. For example if my d fills. out the questionnaire and puts in her preferences of living with a nursing student, when she hits search all the nursing students who are in capstone and have requested similar dorms will show up and at this point she is free to email them. I think if you find a roommate that way u can both request each other and if you are requesting the same dorm they say they will try to put u together as long as you both put the request down. It appears that only works until may 1 though. I was just wondering what happened after that. I think I’ll call housing to double-check. Thanks!

I just found out answer in case anyone else needed to know. There is a space where two people can list each other as preferred roommate on the housing application, however it does have to be done by may 1.After May 1,housing will do the matching.

I went random in Capstone, and ended up becoming best friends with my roommate! Doesn’t happen to everyone, but I’ve heard about hundreds of success stories this past year.

I had to fill out something saying I didn’t smoke, was somewhat clean etc. And in Capstone I know, they try their best to match people by major.

//. That’s great to know NC777 , my d is going random now ,requested Capstone dorm since she is in the program and also keeping fingers crossed for a nursing major as her roommate. It’s good to hear that you had a good experience going random. We know the roommate situation can go either way regardless if u pick or go random. My d is my easiest going child of my four kids so she should be fine with anyone as long as their grades are important to them!

My son is in Capstone and also going random. There are 4 students from his HS here in MD going to USC next year but they decided not to try to room together. They figured it would be easier to meet new people if they all roomed separately.

/\ /\ My older daughter, who just finished her sophomore year at another college has seen that often it is almost better to go random. She has seen some friendships really get strained in the roommate situation. I’m just praying for the best!!
